042 REPORT
PROJECT NATIONAL DAY ABU DHABI
Company: Matrix Laser Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE
During the last National Day in Abu Dhabi, Matrix took on the task of connect- ing the Iconic Emirates Palace Hotel with several buildings in Abu Dhabi using laser beams. The company faced three main challenges. Could each landmark be reached from the roof of the Emirates Palace? Could the health and safety issues of being so close to the airport be overcome? And would the laser show interfere with the helipad at the Emirates Palace? Working with various parties, a solution for each challenge was found. The pro- gramming of the show was done in conjunction with Abu Dhabi Aviation Services, flight captains from VIP Helicopters assisted with the helipad issue and the rest depended on the effectiveness of the lasers. The project was realised using eight 20W Matrix Pure Green lasers. Even over a distance of approximately 20km, the beams held up good visibility, and connected Emirates Palace with monumental buildings like the Grand Mosque and the Maqta Bridge. The installation took seven days, using a typical working period of 5pm to 2am each day. The event is already confirmed again for the next National Day but with nearly the double the quantity of equipment. Commenting on the project, Matrix’s Managing Director, Michael Hilgemann said: “Our clients were very happy about the visibility of the laser beams and they could see them easily after 19km. It made us very proud to satisfy our Government with our products and services, and at the same time they decided already that we have to do it this year again with a few more landmarks.”
COMPANY: Matrix Laser
Can you give us a brief background of your company? My partner and me are former technicians from tarm Laser Technology, we started Matrix eight years ago. Both of us have more than 25 years experience in lasers.
In what type of applications are we likely to see your products? We see our products in typical applications like nightclubs and theme parks, for fixed installations. In the rental business we use our own products for concerts and other kinds of events.
Does laser law and guidance differ from one country to the next? How do you address that with product specifications? It is a actually a pity that there are no general regulations in the world but we are producing all our products in accordance with the German health and safety regulations. Especially in the rental business, it is sometimes shocking to see
what companies are doing. We always set up systems so that they comply with German regulations. The result? I’ve worked for 26 years in the field without any kind of accident.
What is your best selling product? Why do you think that is? Our 5W range in RGB and in 532nm. The products are built in such a way that it is very easy to combine two 5W lasers to one 10W laser. It is a smart product and equipped with all the necessary safety features.
What does the future hold for show lasers? And for your company? In the future, I see lasers being used in new applications, as we are working on a new architectural laser system which is designed for building illuminations. But even in the rental business we see a growing market, especially in the Middle East.
