GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION (ART, CRAFT & DESIGN) A Level


Discover your creativity! If you want to work in any of the creative industries, you’ll thrive on this wide-ranging A Level. It spans research, creative thinking, discussion and techniques for generating ideas, along with hands- on skills like drawing, printing, illustration, and digital skills using Adobe CS6 on Apple Macs; all in pursuit of dynamic visual communication.


Learning about design provides vital practice in many fundamental life skills such as communication, lateral thinking, teamwork, problem-solving, time management and budgeting; all essential in any professional environment.


You’ll be given lots of freedom to develop your own ideas


There’s a blend of short, sharp design exercises and briefs lasting several weeks, covering all aspects of graphic communication from typography and illustration to packaging and advertising.

Fantastic practical opportunities available


Over the two years, you will cover a wide range of important and relevant topics. These include Communication, Health, Safety and Security, Equality and Diversity and Development across life stages.


You will not need to take exams during this programme. Instead, you will be assessed on your assignments and coursework. You will, however, have the valuable opportunity to complete a period of work experience to evaluate how you perform in a real care setting.

Progression Many students will progress to a Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design as a vital step before university. A few go directly on to HE courses here at Petroc or into apprenticeships in the industry. Graphics is a career with endless opportunities; from directing TV commercials to editorial design for magazines and newspapers, from designing packaging to the graphics for a surfboard, and, from game characters to CGI effects. Earning potential is considerable. Where your creativity leads you will depend on you discovering your creative potential and your strengths as a visual communicator.

Progression This Level 3 qualification is nationally recognised by employers. You will also add to your tally of UCAS points – your passport to university. Some of the degrees that our students have gone on to study include nursing, social work, psychology and education.
