YOUR STUDY PROGRAMME
What does the term ‘Your Study Programme’ mean?
The term ‘Your Study Programme’ is used to outline all the elements that make up your timetable at Petroc. Study Programmes are designed to meet your individual learning needs and provide you with the knowledge, skills and attributes required for employment or further study.
Your Study Programme is made up of the following elements:
• An academic, vocational or technical professional qualification
•
Continuing with Maths and/or English Language development
• External work experience and/or employability skills development
• Support to encourage your academic progress and tutorial support
• Self-directed study
• A variety of enrichment activities and opportunities
Academic, Vocational or Technical Professional Qualification
The majority of your timetable will be dedicated to you successfully achieving academic, vocational or technical professional qualifications in your chosen subject area.
Maths and English Language Development
We all recognise how important good Maths and English Language skills are for you as you move into employment and for progression to higher level learning, so these are an essential part of your Study Programme. We are committed to supporting you to improve your Maths and English Language skills within your Study Programme. You will be able to improve these skills through:
• Dedicated Maths and English Language lessons
• Embedded Maths and English Language skills development within your vocational, technical professional and academic classes
Learners enrolling onto a Study Programme with a GCSE English Language and/or GCSE Maths at grade D or below will be required to work towards achieving a GCSE Maths and/or GCSE English Language grade A*-C by the age of 19 years. Where this is not achievable in one year, clear pathways of learning will be offered to you to continue studying these subjects up to 19 years.
Your Study Programme always includes the most appropriate GCSE or Functional Skills class, based on prior attainment and the outcome of a diagnostic skills assessment. Functional Skills are valid qualifications that are designed to build confidence in the everyday, applied use of Maths and English Language. Functional Skills are offered at two levels - Entry Level 3 and Level 1 - and are offered to students who have a grade F or below. A common timetable will allow you to access the right level course for you at your main campus of study.
For students with learning difficulties/disabilities, English Language and Maths will be a core part of your programme. The college will help you to develop these skills at a pace and level to suit your needs and abilities.
