Full-time Prospectus | Your Study Programme

External Work Experience and Employability Skills

Gaining genuine external work experience or undertaking employer-led projects is an essential ingredient to developing the skills that will help you to be ready to succeed at work. Study Programmes at Petroc will also foster employability and enterprise skills through the units that are taught as part of your academic, vocational and technical professional qualification along with access to one or more of the following:

• External work experience, e.g. weekly or block placements

• A wide range of opportunities to practise your practical skills within college in simulated and realistic working environments, e.g. our hair salons, restaurants, and trade workshops

• A variety of challenging enterprise projects

• A variety of interesting live projects, set and assessed by employers

Your Study Programme will also help you to develop the attitudes and behaviours needed to be successful at work such as being punctual, having the appropriate appearance, demonstrating teamworking skills and developing resilience.

Academic Progress

You will have a professional tutor who will monitor your academic progress and support you with any issues that might impact on your ability to achieve and succeed in your chosen qualifications. They will also help you to organise your time and manage your study-load. You will participate in theme weeks, complete tutorials and learning on topics that develop your awareness and understanding of the wider world and support your future work and career progression. These include personal safety, drugs and alcohol awareness, citizenship and UCAS and apprenticeship advice and guidance.

Self-Directed Study

You will have dedicated self-directed study skills sessions which you will use for research, revision and to complete tasks set by your teachers. Some of these sessions will be supervised and facilitated by teaching staff. We also have a wide variety of self-directed study resources available online through our Moodle@Petroc Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Enrichment Activities

Throughout your Study Programme you will have numerous opportunities to get involved in enrichment activities that are focused on your personal and social development. Taking part in just some of the elements of Petroc’s comprehensive enrichment programme will enable you to make new friends, gain new experiences and learn new skills, all as part of this key aspect of college life.

In recent years, activities have included: preparation for World Skills events, attending Higher Education events, participating in the Academic Academy, STEM Academy and Sports Academy, National Citizens Service, debates and competitions, as well as many additional student-led activities.

What Ofsted said about us: “Care, guidance and support for students are good. Students are well cared for by their tutors. Tutorial provision successfully develops students’ personal, academic and employability skills.”
