PROGRESSION INTO ADULTHOOD (19+ learners)
This is a one-year course for students aged 19 and over. This course is for learners who need an additional year in Further Education to develop specific skills to enable them to transition out of college into some form of employment. Learners will have individualised outcomes determined at the start of the year and will develop these skills through social enterprise, supported work placements and volunteering in the community. Vocational options include horticulture and conservation, animal care and craft, design and technology. Other vocational options may be available. Learners who enrol onto this full time post-19 course will need to have an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) for their course fees to be covered or be eligible for application to the bursary.
Fact file: Progression
After completing this course, learners will have developed skills for employment and/or transition into the local community. Learners will be assessed throughout the year to determine their most appropriate progression route. Some learners will progress on to a Supported Internship or Project SEARCH. Some learners will transition from Petroc into the community and use the skills they have developed in the voluntary sector and community involvement.
How long?
This is a one-year course. The course is full time delivered over four days. If it is appropriate for a learner to further develop specific employability skills, funding for an additional year can be applied for through an individual assessment and application. The course is assessed continually through the year and progress is evidenced in a personal portfolio.
What do I need?
You need to be willing to try different work experience placements both internally and externally to Petroc. You will need protective clothing as appropriate to the vocational options that you choose.

PROJECT SEARCH
Project SEARCH is a supported internship programme for people with a learning disability aged 18 -24 who want to gain paid employment. Each intern accesses three ten-week placements at the hospital during the academic year. The placements are across a wide range of departments within the hospital and are carefully chosen by Project SEARCH staff to match the skills of the intern with the department, supportively develop the skills of an intern and maximise the opportunities for employment for the intern. The intern works Monday – Friday and completes 32.5 hrs per week.
The working day starts in the training room at 8.30am. Here, learners focus on their targets, and how they will be realised. Then they work in the placement from 9am – 2pm. At 2pm they come back to the training room until 3.30pm. In the afternoon session in the training room they discuss issues they have faced in the workplace and work toward a City and Guilds Certificate in Employability.
Interns at North Devon District Hospital have worked in a wide range of placements including: sterile services, booked admissions, retail, domestics, finance, portering, procurement, occupational therapy, restaurant, recycling, medical records, EBME, and new departments are also coming on board.
Fact file: Progression
The desired outcome for Project SEARCH interns is paid employment.
How long?
This is a one-year programme which is run as a partnership between the NHS, Petroc and Pluss. It is based in the hospital with a dedicated training room and two full time, trained staff.
What do I need?
At the start of the course the interns spend three weeks training, where they will complete a full and wide ranging NHS induction (supported by members of the Project SEARCH team). You will need to be able to get to North Devon District Hospital independently.
