Medics Academy
The Medics Academy is a specialised tutorial group for students wishing to pursue a career in medicine and dentistry. The key structure to the year is modelled on Problem Based Learning; a style used by many UK medical schools and is punctuated with a number of trips and guest speakers. Students develop an appreciation of what a degree and career in these fields entails.
The Medics Academy is designed to give you a head start when applying for university and building your knowledge around topical issues. Trips to Cardiff University and Exeter Medical School help students understand what universities look for in candidates, as well as providing opportunities for students to try their hand at clinical skills. The programme also gives you the opportunity to enhance your analytical, evaluative and critical thinking skills through a specialised scheme of work.

A Levels “As part of the Medics Academy, I’ve taken part in many activities to improve my understanding of the profession and increase my chances of being accepted onto a medicine degree at university.
Earlier this year, I attended the MedLink Conference, where I was able to listen to experts from the medical profession talk about their experiences and different career paths. We have also had several guest speakers visit us at college which, again, has given us great insight into the healthcare environment. In addition, we have gone on several trips, locally, with the Academy to the Children’s Hospice and North Devon Hospice and will also be embarking on a weekly work experience placement at the hospital alongside the Care Academy.”
Students have many chances to speak with healthcare professionals at hospices, hospitals and universities to gain an appreciation and solid understanding of what a degree and career in medicine involves. Our experienced tutors will be on hand to guide you through the university application process and you will have the opportunity to attend mock interviews and gain personal statement support with NHS doctors, to ensure you stand the best chance of securing a place on your chosen degree course.
