ART, CRAFT & DESIGN A Level


This diverse and creative A Level will develop your independence and enthusiasm in art, craft and design. You will work across a variety of practical areas in 2D and 3D, and explore the concepts behind your pieces through research, creative thinking and by developing your ideas.


There will be opportunities to take part in inspirational visits to galleries and exhibitions


The AS and A Levels are modular programmes made up of a themed coursework unit followed by an externally set assignment which includes a timed piece of work. You will be introduced to many new ways of working and thinking about art, craft and design, and then encouraged to work individually to evolve your own solutions to a brief through discussion, research, experimentation and exploration.


Each year, there will be the opportunity to take part in an educational visit to galleries and exhibitions. These visits are a really valuable and enjoyable experience that past students have found extremely helpful in extending their studies.

Progression The knowledge you’ll gain will be valuable for any visual career from architecture to interior design and jewellery making, from community artist to fashion forecaster and many, many more. Many students progress to the Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design and some go directly on to a specialist degree course in art and design (also available here at Petroc).

BIOLOGY A Level


The first module concentrates on the development of practical skills, such as planning, implementing, analysis and evaluation. The second module, Foundations in Biology, includes cell structure, biological molecules, enzymes, membranes and transport and the cell cycle. The third module, Exchange and Transport, looks at exchange surfaces and transport in animals and plants. The final module, Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease, looks at diseases and immunity, biodiversity and classification and evolution.


Students go on to careers in medicine, veterinary science, conservation and physiotherapy


In the second year there are two modules. The first, Communication, Homeostasis and Energy, includes excretion, neural and hormonal communication, plant and animal responses, photosynthesis and respiration. The final module is Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems. This investigates cellular control, patterns of inheritance, manipulating genomes, cloning and biotechnology, ecosystems, populations and sustainability. These will also be supported by a number of relevant practical investigations.

Progression This A Level is highly regarded by universities and employers, and combines well with Chemistry, Psychology, Geography, Environmental Science and Sport Science. Many students go on to university to study for careers such as medicine, veterinary science, ecology, pharmacology, microbiology, conservation, dentistry or physiotherapy. You could also progress to Petroc’s Foundation Degree in Human Biosciences, biologist work in the pharmaceutical industry, health-related and medical technician roles, in agriculture or environmental research.
