For anyone with a passion for sport, the sports industry offers all kinds of enticing career paths to choose from. The first step is to choose the one that’s right for you. This programme is designed to give you a taste of the skills and experiences you’ll need to succeed in a career in sport.


You’ll have an advantage when applying for jobs such as assistant coach or leisure centre assistant


Areas of study include: Anatomy and Physiology, Sports Analysis, Sports Leadership and Training and Fitness. You’ll complete your assignments in a number of different ways including written work, organised coaching sessions, training plans and presentations.


We’ll involve you in planning and leading sports activities, instructing exercise to others and contributing to real-life sport experiences.


You will have the opportunity to be involved in the young sports leaders development package as a part of this programme, where you’ll gain real leadership experience in a range of settings.


SPORT (DEVELOPMENT, COACHING & FITNESS) BTEC Diploma/Extended Diploma


If you have a passion for sport and would like a career in the sport and fitness industry, this could be the study programme for you.


You will take part in community events and school coaching sessions


This valuable qualification combines theoretical research assignments with practical assessment. It includes a wide range of units including, Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport, the Physiology of Fitness, Assessing Risk in Sport, Organising Sports Events, Fitness Testing in Sport and Exercise, Fitness Training and Programming, Exercise Health and Lifestyle, Sports Nutrition, Team Sports, Rules Regulations and Officiating, Sports Coaching, Sports Development and Sports Massage.


You’ll learn by completing assignments based on real challenges faced by sports development officers, fitness instructors, sports teachers and other sport and leisure professionals. Furthermore, you’ll be able to take an active role in a range of sports events in the local community.

Progression The preparation and training that this qualification provides, will give you an advantage over other applicants when applying for jobs. Successful students may also progress to more advanced Level 3 courses at Petroc.

Progression This Diploma is valued by employers and universities. Following further degree study, students from this study programme have progressed to careers in primary and secondary teaching, sports development, sports therapy and fitness management to name a few. Raising participation in sport at a local level, this course offers a real vocational insight into the genuine challenges.

You will have to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.


Entry requirements for Two-year Level 3 Extended National Diplomas are outlined on page 19.


Alternatively, we accept applicants who hold a Merit or above in a relevant Level 2 Diploma.
