Full-time Prospectus | Supported Learning


PREPARATION FOR ADULTHOOD (16-18 years)


This course is one or two years’ long, and is tailored to meet the educational and support needs of Pre-Entry and Entry Level 1 and 2 learners.


Learners will take one of two Pathways: Pathway A:


(Year 1) A supported transition into college. Learners will focus on gaining skills for independent living and participating in the community. This Pathway includes an Award in Independent Living and an Award in Accessing Community Facilities. On Pathway A there are opportunities for internal work placements.


Fact file: Progression


After completing this course, you can progress on to Pathway A Year 2. In Year 2 you will complete a Certificate in Independent Living. You will have opportunities for external work experience and will engage in volunteering and travel training. You will continue your progress with English and Maths. There is also an option to progress on to a Supported Internship after this course. This option is decided on an individual basis and is something that your tutor would discuss with you if appropriate.


How long?


This is a one-year course. Most students will progress into Pathway A Year 2 after completing this course. This is a full time course delivered over four full days. The course is assessed by continual assessment throughout the year with progress evidenced in a personal portfolio – this course has no exams.


What do I need?


You do not need to have any formal qualifications to enrol onto this course. You will need protective clothing appropriate to the vocational options that you choose. Clothing and equipment will be discussed with you during your interview. There is a small fee for some of the weekly enrichment activities. There is always an option of activities that do not incur a cost. Students will need to contribute towards the cost of the annual residential activity.

Pathway B:


(Year 1) A supported transition into college. Learners will focus on gaining employability skills and/or skills that will enable them to progress on to a Level 1 mainstream vocational course. Learners will complete a Certificate in Skills towards Enabling Progression. Learners will study English and Maths, taking Functional Skills or GCSE as appropriate to their progression. Learners on Pathway B choose vocational options from a choice including motor vehicle, hairdressing, woodwork, catering, business administration, conservation and bike maintenance.


All learners follow a curriculum which offers opportunities to work on their personal and social development throughout the course. The course is enriched by a variety of activities, workshops, educational visits and a residential trip. Enrichment activities are offered one afternoon per week including sports, arts and crafts, performing arts and swimming.


Fact file: Progression


After completing this course you can progress on to Pathway B Year 2.


During Year 2 you will work on a Diploma in Skills towards Enabling Progression, continue with your Maths and English and complete an external work experience placement. Other options are to progress on to a Level 1 mainstream vocational course dependent on your level of development over the year or apply for a Supported Internship (see Supported Internship course description).
