sport@eastcorkjournal.ie East Cork Soccer Notes
Youghal created a couple of very good clear cut chanc- es but just couldn’t get the second to put the
game
beyond Rockmount. As of- ten happens with teams in the final fifteen minutes of the game, Youghal started to sit back and conceded ground. Rockmout forced thee or four corners putting Youghal under a lot of pres- sure as the game wore on, but Youghal’s defence stood firm and with seven minutes remaining put the game be- yond doubt. A counter attack from
Youghal up the right wing saw Sean Kenneally put in a great ball from out by the corner flag, it found Leigh Desmond at
the far post
who got up above everyone to score with a great header to seal the game for Youghal on a 2-0 scoreline. Youghal saw out the remainder of the game for another clean sheet and a fantastic result. This leaves Youghal need- ing a point from their two remaining league games to be sure of securing the title. Youghal head to Passage on Tuesday night
next,
looking to secure that point and the title. Best of luck to the lads and well done on a great performance again, especially after playing two games in three days. Their commitment and fitness lev- els cannot be faulted.

SCHOOLGIRLS SOCCER LEAGUE Kinsale 3 - 5 Youghal
United We made the long trip
to Kinsale last weekend to take on Kinsale on home turf. On a sunny Saturday morning we arrived in good spirits to a spectacular view of Charlesfort and Kin- sale. With only two injuries to our vast squad namely Kellie and Leah we decid- ed to change things around up front to end our goal drought. We
Captain of the day Agatha between the posts
started with our with a
defensive trio of Ava, Kate and Zuzanna at
the back.
In Midfield we started with Blaithin, Emily, Whitney and Aoibhe as a solid four across the middle with Mol- ly sitting between midfield and our two strikers Ciara and Hannah. This was a big change for the girls up front but we are fully aware of
the talents all the girls have to adapt when we try new tactics. From the off the girls
pressed hard and after five minutes Molly put a ball up the Ciara who buried it in the bottom corner. One up after five minutes and a sign of things to come. The Youghal girls kept the pressure on and before long following on from a corner Ciara popped up to get her second goal. Kinsale were under a lot of pressure but kept
pressing and nearly
caught us on the break but Kate and Ava got back to clear the lines. Hannah was next to bet on the scoresheet using her fierce pace to get past the the Kinsale defence and put one up in the top corner. Ciara was pressing hard for her hat-trick and had a fine shot blocked which broke on the edge of the box to Molly who shot high to the keepers left and buried it. Four up and we were on a roll. With half time fast approaching and plans for a lot of changes to the team Ciara broke past the defence to get her hat- trick.
Halftime 0-5 We made a raft of chang-
es in the second half bring on most of our subs and again trying out some new formations. All of our girls namely Joanne, Lorna, Es- say, and the two Lucys all came on to play a good solid game against the ever bat- tling Kinsale. Because of all these changes which upset the team a bit Kinsale got two goals fast after halftime bit once the girls settles in and got going Youghal put in one of the best perfor- mances of the season. Our player of the match
has to go to hat-trick hero Ciara. She pressed hard all day and fully deserved her three goals. Well done Ciara super performance. Final score Kinsale 3 - 5
Youghal. We are always looking for
new girls to start from the ages of nine upwards. Also because of the amount of girls starting soccer we ur- gently need new coaches/ parents to help out. If an- yone wants to get involved please give Jonathan a call on 086 8563292.
MUNSTER SENIOR LEAGUE JUNIOR DIVISION 1
Blarney 0 - 1 Youghal
United Youghal travelled to play
Blarney on Wednesday night for a league game. With Youghal top of the division by 3 pts and with a game in hand and with four games remaining,
this was
going to be a crucial game. It would really put pressure on those teams behind them if they could come up with a good result here. And for those who travelled from Youghal to watch, it was heart in mouth stuff. From start to finish in this
game Youghal did virtually all the pressing and applied the vast majority of the pres- sure. Youghal played some great
football throughout,
on what has to be said was a beautiful surface and a cred- it to the groundsman. Kevin Anderson in the Youghal goal was far the quieter, but what he did have to do, he did very well. The story of the game
was the amount of pressure that Youghal put Blarney under and the quality of the Blarney keeper who made some outstanding stops throughout the game. After the first 10 mins it
looked like a case of when Youghal would score, rath- er than if, but chance after chance just wouldn’t find the back
of the Blarney
net. The half wore on with near miss for Youghal after near miss. The second half was more of the same and as the game entered the fi- nal 15 mins, Youghal were throwing everything at
the
Blarney goal but came up against a keeper in out- standing form as well as the hitting the post on two occa- sions. With time running out,
corner after corner for Youghal just wouldn’t pro- duce a winner, that was until 3 mins remaining. A great ball into the six yard box saw Anthony Kelly pop up to get the final touch for a crucial goal and what turned out to be the winner for Youghal and a great three points. This result puts Youghal six points ahead of second placed Cobh Wanderers level on games with three games remaining. Games are coming thick and fast lately for Youghal and in the league again, they entertain Rockmount at home in Ar- drath Park this Friday night at 7:30pm. Please
up and support the lads as they make the push for the league title.

were on their travels again this time up was Carrigaline B. The game started with Youghal doing all the at- tacking with Bradley Mal- eka, Chris Buckley, Zdenek Gazi, Aaron Murphy and William Duffy Thompson coming close to breaking the deadlock. In the 12th minute Youghal broke the deadlock with a fantastic move. Conor Galvin passed the ball out of defence to Bradley Maleka in the mid- field Bradley in turn passed the ball to Chris who play a fantastic ball through the defence for Bradley who had carried on his run he then slotted the ball home under the advancing Carri- galine keeper GOAL! 0 – 1 to Youghal. At this point it was all
Youghal attack after attack. In the 20th
minute Bradley
took a rasping shot testing the keeper who could only push it away for a corner. William swung in a super ball from the corner with Aaron Murphy unlucky not to get a good connection on the ball. The Carrigaline defender pushed it further out of the danger area only for Sean Kenneally to hit an unstoppable volley to the top left hand corner of the goal. Goal!! 0 – 2 Youghal. The rest of the half Carri- galine tried to push up in attack but everything they threw at our defence of Conor Galvin, Sean Molo- ney and Ciaran Reilly han- dled with ease. Half Time Carrigaline 0

At this point Car- rigaline threw all caution to the wind with 3 or 4 attacker they came close to getting a goal but the quick thinking of our goalkeeper Dylan Lane narrowed the angle forcing the attacker to put it wide. The next goal came directly from the next play. Dylan play a short kick out to Ciaran who pushed the ball up the wing for William he beat
Cobh had the better of the game, and Youghal strug- gled to get a grip on the game.
In fairness to Youghal
they stuck at it and started to get a hold on the game themselves. The hard work- ing midfield of Sean Ken- neally, Ross McCarthy and Darren O’Connor started to control the middle of the park, which in turn helped the lads up front giving them more possession and helped to cause the Cobh defence problems. Cobh Wanderers Youghal progressed to the
semi-final of the Junior Su- per Cup on Friday night last with a hard fought victory against Cobh Wanderers. Youghal are at the business end of the season now with games coming thick and fast. Over the last few weeks two great wins in the league at home to UCC 3 - 1 and away to St Mary’s 0 - 2 have propelled Youghal to the top of the division, three points ahead of Cobh with a game in hand. Youghal started this cup
match with a much changed side due to injuries and a few of the lads who were on a weekend away. It showed in the first fifteen minutes as
mainder of the game very well as they soaked up any pressure that Cobh threw at them. On the night it was great to see some of the lads in the squad who wouldn’t be regular starters step up and put in some great per- formances. Also the youth players who put in very good performances on the night. Jack Monaghan in goal who put in a very assured perfor- mance, Alan Murphy and Aaron O’Regan who both played the second half and did extremely well in the midfield area. This really is the busi-
ness end of the season and Youghal play three league games in the next
seven
days starting next Wednes- day away to Blarney, home to Rockmount next Friday night and their second last league game is away to Pas- sage on Tuesday week. Best of luck to the lads in what is a defining week in terms of where the league title goes.

SCHOOLBOYS LEAGUE U12 Castleview A 2 - 5
Youghal United eastcorkjournal Youghal United’s U12s
travelled to O’Shea Park to take on table toppers Cas- tleview A on Wednesday 19 April. The game start- ed at a very fast pace with Castleview asking a lot of questions of our defence. Sean M and Sean K, Conor and Ciaran stood solid and answered all Castleview could throw at them. After about 15 minutes the home side started to get frustrat- ed and resorted to fouling our players at every chance they could. This resulted in Ciaran getting
injured
and had to be replaced by Ryan T. Youghal were now taking control and looked very dangerous with every play. The midfield of Wil- liam, Bradley and Chris were breaking through at will only to be thwarted by the Castleview goalkeeper and a little bit of poor fin- ishing. Ryan T was the next player to be injured hurting his wrist at this point Ciaran was feeling better and slot- ted back into his right back position. The half
ended
with Aaron being very un- lucky to have been judged off side. 0 – 0 at halftime. The second half started
at a very high tempo again with both sides coming close. The
came in the 5th
breakthrough minute of
the second half when a goal kick from Dylan was won by the Castleview number 10 who ran past our defence and slotted the ball home 1-0
Castleview. Straight
away from the centre Brad- ley broke into the box and was hacked down by the Castleview defender PEN- ALTY!!! Bradley got up to take the penalty. He struck a ferocious shot that hit the crossbar came back out and Bradley headed it into the goal. There was confusion then as the referee awarded the goal and then disallowed it. No other player had touched the rebound before Bradley had so the goal was disallowed still 1-0 to Cas- tleview. Youghal were now run-
ning riot and attacking at will Bradley pick up the ball yet again and ran at the heart of the terrified Cas- tleview defence He dribbled past
defenders and cool-
ly slotted the ball into the corner of the net GOAL!! 1-1. At this point it looked like there could only be one Continued on next page
