Irelands Alcatraz,
Spike Island has been short listed for an inter- national tourist award. The island fortress is
the only tourist attrac- tion outside Dublin and Belfast to be nominated. It joins Buckingham
Palace, The Eiffel Tow- er, the Coliseum and the Acropolis in the top ten
sites chosen to compete for the European cate- gory of the World Travel Awards 2017. In 2015 the Guiness
Hop store in Dublin was given the overall acco- lade and last year Bel- fast’s Titanic was given the honour. Spike Islands manag-
er John Crotty hopes to make it an Irish three in a row. “The aim for us is to become the go to desti-
nation for the South of Ireland and to be seen on a par with Titanic and the Guiness Store- house.” “We
want to
be a key attraction and cornerstone of Ireland’s Ancient East” comment- ed Mr Crotty. Company Director
