61 Sweetman Goal Earns Mogeely Cup Final Victory

Mogeely 1 Cappoquin 0

The DB Sports U13 Cup

final took extra time to get a result as an Oran Sweet- man strike, five minutes into the first period of extra time

proved enough to earn Mo- geely the win after a hard- fought encounter, played at St Colman’s Park in Cobh on Friday night.

Indeed, that strike was

the only real chance in a game where Cappoquin created the best chances, but could find no way past Euan Wimpenny in the Mogeely goal. The Mogeely custodian saved bravely at the feet of Sean Tobin in the opening half and again mid-way through the sec-

ond half as both defences were very much on top. Patrick Daly was im-

mense for Mogeely along- side team captain Adam Bailey while Sean O’Con- nor and Billy McGann were lively in attack, but they found it very hard to get past Aidan and Ronan Mans- field, while Eoin McGrath

and Kieran Sheridan put through a few nice balls for Sean Tobin to chase but on each occasion, he failed to beat the advancing keeper. After Mogeely went in

front through a fine finish by Oran Sweetman from a difficult angle, they with- drew O’Connor to defence where his speed was used to

beneficial effect. Cappoquin came close to an equaliser when a Kieran Sheridan free kick was glanced goal- ward by Tobin, but it went the wrong side of the post. It was that kind of evening for the corner-stone side who must now look to the division 2 final for honours, where they will again meet

Mogeely who will now be bidding for a league and cup double. After the game which

was well refereed by Kieran Hayes, League Chairman Brian Donnelly presented the DB Sports sponsored medals and cup to a de- lighted Adam Bailey, the Mogeely team captain.

Cork v Derry Littlewoods Ireland Camogie Leagues Division 2 Final Cork 2-16 Derry 1-5

East Cork CORK were singing in

the rain at the Coralstown Kinnegad grounds, pro- ducing a power-packed second half performance to win the Littlewoods Ire- land Camogie Leagues Di- vision 2 title for a fifth time. It was a disappointing

capitulation by Derry, after competing well in the first half and only going in at the break trailing by 0-9 to 1-3.

Cork had caused Derry

plenty of trouble in that in- itial period though despite playing into a strong wind and with their own defence restricting the Ulster side to just two points after the restart, the result was never really in doubt. Rachel O’Shea scored

six points to be named player of the match but she had strong opposition for the individual award, with defenders Lauren Calla- nan and Sarah Buckley in particular standing out. It was a good boost for

Leeside camogie, with the seniors having lost the Di- vision 1 final a week ago. They were able to call upon three of the players who started that game against Kilkenny – Jennifer Barry, Niamh McCarthy and Lin- da Collins – and possessed an all-round depth that proved too much for Derry. The persistent rain made

it difficult for both sides but Cork laid the foundations for their victory in that opening half, as they used

a sweeper between the two traditional defensive lines to cut off the avenue of supply to the Derry inside forwards. It didn’t work imme-

diately however, as after Collins and Karen Kielt exchanged early points, Mary Hegarty grabbed a long delivery on the edge of the square and blasted it to the Cork net. Niamh McCarthy point-

ed for Cork but two on the trot from Hegarty and Kielt stretched the Derry lead to four inside eight minutes of the throw in. Callanan and Buckley

began to exert significant influence from half-back however and a brace of points from Maeve Mc- Carthy, four from O’Shea and one more from Kate- lyn Hickey established that three-point lead at the in- terval.

eastcorkjournal Finola Neville and

O’Shea stretched the ad- vantage early in the second half but Áine McAllister replied with a brace to keep Derry in touch. They wouldn’t score

again though, while Cork always looked dangerous. Caroline Sugrue was intro- duced by Paudie Murray and she had an instant im- pact, grabbing a goal and a point. The excellent Maeve McCarthy and O’Shea added to the tally before another sub, Sarah Fahy put the icing on the cake with an excellent goal.
