Fr. O’Neill’s 2-12 Charleville 1-16
face a winner take all con- test
Fr. O’ Neill’s will now against
fellow East
Cork side Castlelyons after they came within a whisker of defeating Charleville in a cracking first round Pre- mier Intermediate Hurling contest played in Pairc Ui Rinn last Sunday after- noon. The men from Aghavoine
were within a point of lev- elling with Charleville
in
a pulsating finish but the North Cork side just held on for the victory that puts
them through to a meeting with Kanturk in round 2A. Fr O’ Neill’s will look
back at the numerous wides they had over the hour and will rue the space they gave Charleville
earlier in the
game as current Cork sen- ior hurler, Darragh Fitzgib- bon, displayed some neat touches and was a constant thorn in the O’ Neill’s de- fence. Fr O’ Neill’s were slow
in settling as Charleville, coached by former Cork star, Ben O’ Connor, led
by five points to one after ten minutes of play. Billy Dunne added to Eoin Con- way’s opening point on 12 minutes as Mark Kavanagh added two further points for the North Cork team. Dunne and Kavanagh swapped a point a piece and in the 20th
minute Dar-
ragh Fitzgibbon showed real class when he pointed what was a majestic score as he took the ball inside his own defence and careered through the O’Neill’s rear- guard, bouncing the ball twice off the ground before finishing without catching for a score worth the admis- sion price alone. A minute later Billy Dunne broke through and
rattled Cian Collins’s net to let three points between the sides. Declan Dalton pointed a long free but this was countered by Charlev- ille with a further point to let three points between the sides at the break. Fr O’ Neill’s turned to
face the wind in the second half with Dalton and James Kennedy raising white flags respectively. Andrew Cag- ney and Fitzgibbon extend- ed the Charleville lead but O’ Neill’s were intent on re- ducing their lead with Mark O’Keeffe, Eoin Conway and Declan Dalton on tar- get to bring the score to the minimum between the sides with ten minutes remaining. Kevin O’Sullivan levelled
the game after he cut over a side-line three minutes later and now Charleville were on the back foot. Charleville were now un-
der pressure but from the puck out Andrew Cagney doubled on the ball to gave Paudie Higgins no chance with a bullet to put three points between the sides again. Mark Kavanagh, who was acting as a sweep- er for most of the game, hit another point to make it four points as we entered injury time. A minute into added time Declan Dalton struck a powerful shot to the Charleville net but try as they might from all an- gles Fr O’ Neill’s could not get that all important point
to level the game and when referee Colm Lyons blew the final whistle it was al- most an anti-climax as both teams had given their all in the previous fifteen min- utes. However the spoils again go to Charleville as Fr O’ Neill’s face fellow East Cork team Castlelyons in round 2B with the loser here making an early cham- pionship exit. Scores: Charleville; M.

Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship
Castlelyons 1-13 Kanturk 3-12
Castlelyons had to
give best to Kanturk in this first round opener played at the superb Cas- tletownroche venue on Sunday afternoon. The winners who were wind assisted in the opening half
strong position at
did not look in a half
time as they held just a three-point advantage, but a solid defensive dis- play and some wayward
shooting left Castlelyons racing the ones that got away. The sides were lev-
el five times early on as they shared 14 points 0-7 apiece with Antho- ny Spillane
the main
threat for Castlelyons, but with the strong wind helping Anthony Nash puck-outs, Kanturk were causing plenty of problems for Castlelyons
who looked to be going well when Aidan O’Sul- livan raced through to goal. That score was to be their only major as Alan O’Keeffe bagged the opening goal for Kanturk, while Donna- cha Kenneally hit their second just on the stroke of half time to leave Kanturk in front by a goal, 2-9 to 1-9, a lead that was certainly not unassailable given the strength of the wind. Of course, the wind will not win any game for you and Castlely- ons failed to make any inroads after the inter-
val with the opening
score coming in the 42nd minute, a third major for Kanturk from the stick of Liam O’Keeffe and this was followed by a free from Lorcain McLoughlin, to stretch the lead out to seven points. Castlelyons just could not get going de- spite the best efforts of Colm Barry and while Anthony Spillane, Colm Spillane, and Niall O’Leary did get points, Kanturk had done enough to hold out for a win that will now pit them against Charleville in round 2A, while it will
