Castlemartyr 0-14 Kilbrittian 2-11

under

Castlemartyr went to Carbery side

Kilbrittian in the first round of the Intermediate Hurling Championship at a cold and damp Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday night last. Even though there was only three points in it at the final whistle the

nine-point margin at half time was a mountain too steep for their young side. The

exchanges were

fairly equal with both sides level a number of times inside the first ten min- utes before Kilbrittian put their noses in front with a converted 65 by Maurice

Sexton. A further Chris Hickey point put two be- tween them but

Jamie

Stack kept the East Cork lads in touch with points from placed balls. Tom Harrington, who Cas- tlemartyr had problems with all night, added his second point on 20 min- utes and Sexton again struck a great point to put three points between the sides again. Declan Kelly and Stack hit a brace of points with a third Har- rington flag raised before the turning point in the game where referee Cum- mins awarded a penalty to

the Kilbrittian contingent with two minutes of nor- mal time remaining in the half. Former Cork player, Ross Cashman made no mistake and this goal ex- tended their lead to five and when Cian O’Leary bagged a second goal two minutes later Castlemartyr were under serious pres- sure as the short whistle blew after Sexton convert- ed a 65. Castlemartyr came out and faced into a strong wind in the second half. There was more of an ur- gency in their play and this showed early in the half as

Ml. Kelly, Barra O’Tu- ama, Jamie Stack, Liam Martin, and Brian Law- ton all raised white flags before Kilbrittian realised the second half was after starting. However Mossie Sexton stemmed the tide with a converted 65 and a free to bring six points again between the sides. It was down hatches in the Kilbrittian defence for the remaining six or seven minutes but Lawton, O’ Tuama and James Law- ton got through for points but could not rattle the net for the all important goal, even a last minute penalty

by Brian Lawton was saved and the danger cleared. It was surprising that Kilbrit- tian only scored two points in the second half, both from placed balls. Scores: Kilbrittian: M.

East Cork Junior A Football Quarter Final

Erin’s Own 0-10 Carrig Na bhFear 0-08

Erin’s Own, just about

did enough to gain vic- tory and progress to the semi-final of the Michael O’Connor Motor Factors ECJAFC following a hard- fought win over Carrig Na bhFear at the splendid Lis- goold venue on Bank Holi- day Monday evening. In the finish, it was the

ability of free-taker Ste- phen Lee to hold his nerve

that separated the sides

as he slotted over all but three of his sides points, in what was a low scoring affair dominated by solid defences. Both sides tried to play

an attacking game but all too often the delivery did not match the intent as the moves broke down. After a bright start with Stephen Lee and Paul Sheehan

trading points it was Carrig that moved in front as Paul Sheehan with his second and Oisin Crowley from a free left it 0-3 to 0-1 after ten minutes. With Kieran Murphy fielding well, the Caherlag outfit got back on parity by the 22nd

min-

ute as Stephen Lee from a free, Stephen Horgan and Lee again had the sides level after Paul Murphy had slotted a neat point for Carrig who went to the interval trailing by a point, after Alan Bowen put Er- in’s Own back in front in the 27th

minute with his

side leading by 0-5 to 0-4 in what was a mundane first half. The second half began

brightly and saw Alan Bow- en extend the lead with a well taken point but once again Carrig came for- ward and points from Paul Murphy from play and an Oisin Crowley free had the sides level once more. Paul O’Keeffe had Carrig back in front but the lead lasted just a minute as Stephen Lee converted once more. It was all to play for

coming down the final stretch with Stephen Lee

edging Erin’s Own back in front in the 51st

minute.

Carrig almost got a goal but a superb block by Cor- mac Dooley saved the day before

fisted over the equaliser. Carrig Na bhFear at stage were more

likely winner with

the introduction of John Forde adding to their at- tack. However, their fin- ishing did not match their approach work as strong defending kept Carrig out. In contrast at the other end the more

direct play of Erin’s Own yielded a few

Brendan Murphy this

looking the

free’s and while Stephen Lee was wide with two ef- forts, he did convert in the 55th

and 61st minutes, with

superb strikes to send Erin’s Own into the semi-final. Overall, they just about deserved the victory, but Carrig Na bhFear pushed them all the way and had their finishing been a little better they may well have won.
