dents are set to cook up a storm in the kitchen next Thursday 11 May as they compete in the National Final of Ap- prentice Chef 2017. In its sixth year Ap-

prentice Chef is aimed at secondary school stu- dents, to promote the importance of healthy eating in overall person- al physical and mental wellbeing, as well as combating obesity and other health issues. Each finalist’s dish must to in- clude ‘good mood foods’ based on seasonality, availability, locally pro- duced and healthy un- processed ingredients. Doireann McCaugh-

ley and Emily O’Hara from Midleton College

will be among 23 stu- dents selected nationally to cook for one of Ire- lands top chef ’s Mark Doe. The

will be installed at vari- ous locations around the town including Upper Mill Road Railway Sta- tion Junction, Lower Mill Road Park Street

Junc-

tion, the Court House / Gooses Acre Gyrato- ry, Main Street

North

and South, Broderick street, The Rock/ Dis- tillery Walk (entrance), St Mary’s Road (Convent Cross), Church Lane / Riverside Way Junc- tion, Cork Road and the Northern Relief Road. The

scheme will in-

clude a number of cam- era types, some of which will have the capability of reading car registration numbers and vehicle de- tails, others will be rota- tional, with the remainder being stationary. The system is designed

to be self-reliant and have optimum coverage. If a suspicious incident

occurs, or a disturbance breaks out, staff at

the

monitoring centre will be able

to move cameras to

gain the best possible foot- age, enabling the Gardaí to present good solid evi- dence in court. The application for a

CCTV system for Mid- leton was first made in 2014, and funding of €100,000 was provided for the initiative in the 2013 Midleton Town Council Budget.

In 2014 Midleton CCTV Ltd was estab- lished with membership of the company drawn from members of the for- mer Town Council Joint Policing Committee. A number

of surveys

were carried out to ensure optimum benefit from the scheme. Following the detailed

survey of the area the Garda Commissioner had recommended some changes to the plan, which gave rise to a delay in pro- viding the system.

The

Garda Commissioner signed off on the system last September, allowing the project to go to tender. Fine Gael Councillor

• Midleton Main Street where a New CCTV System is to be installed to help fight crime

eastcorkjournal @eastcorkjournal / #eastcorkjournal Susan McCarthy wel-

comed the move and said speed in providing the system was of utmost im- portance. “Living on the street I

see anti-social behaviour first hand, and there has been a marked increase on the main street. We were targeted twice with- in 5 weeks, and on the first

occasion, my 15 year old daughter was in the shop when a brawl took place on the street and the win- dow was smashed. On the second time it was a larger disturbance, with an individual break- ing windows and trying to kick the door in.” Sinn Fein Councillor, Danielle Twomey, stated

that businesses are bear- ing the brunt of this an- ti-social behaviour. Miss Twomey said “An-

tisocial behaviour is on the increase in Midleton and Gardaí need CCTV in order to do their job to the best.” She said she awaited

the installation with “bat- ed breath.”
