Midleton’s Men’s Shed Close To Having A New Home
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
The quest by Midleton
Men’s shed to find a per- manent home could be at an end. This week Cork Coun-
ty Council said it would consider leasing a vacant building in the grounds of Aras Cuimhne an Pi- arsaigh.
It’s expected the offer of
a property will be before the June sitting of the bor- ough for formal approval. The news comes follow-
ing the tabling of a mo- tion by Fine Gael Coun- cillor Susan McCarthy. The Midleton based
Cllr told the May sitting of the East Cork Munic- ipality the leasing of a vacant property on the
grounds of the Midleton Municipal building would greatly benefit community groups like the Midleton Men’s shed. Earlier this year the lo-
cal authority said it would look favourably at leasing vacant units where appro- priate. Independent Council-
lor Noel Collins who sec- onded Cllr McCarthy’s
motion said he had been advocating on behalf of the East Cork group but had not made any head- way on providing a unit to date. He said he had written
five letters to community groups in the Midleton area enclosing self-ad- dressed envelopes but his letters of appeal had gone unanswered. Sinn Fein Councillor
Danielle Twomey said the provision of a permanent home for the Midleton men’s shed would be “very positive.” Men’s sheds are inter-
national mental health initiatives allowing men to share their skills and make new friends in an effort to tackle issues such as iso- lation and mental health problems. At present the Midle-
