May 2017 Cobh Museum Launches Anchors Aweigh Exhibition

cially launched its new- est exhibition, Anchors Aweigh, last Friday, 28
April. The
During the last exhibition was
unveiled to the public for the first time at Cobh Museum last week, with Anchors Aweigh focus- ing on the United States Navy’s time in Queens- town from 1917-18.

years of World War I a total of 92 US ships were stationed at Cork Harbour, with the Navy building a number of facilities around the area including a sea plane station operated by the
US Naval Air Service at Aghada, a repair station at the naval dockyard on Haulbowline Island and a hospital at Whitepoint, west
of what is now
Cobh (formally Queen- stown). The exhibit will also focus on how the
US sailors spent their
leisure time in town and area.
Anchors Aweigh joins
other current exhibitions such as the Scuttling of the Aud 1916 and Lusi- tania: A Day in May. Cobh Museum is
housed within the former Presbyterian Church known as Scots Church is located along High Road and is a run on a not-for-profit basis. The museum, run on a not-for-profit basis, is staffed by a team of over
20 volunteers is open daily from April through to October. From Mon- day to Saturday the museum is open from 11am-1pm and 2-5pm and on Sundays 2.30-5pm.
