Munster U-17 Hurling Championship Final Cork 3-13
Waterford 1-12 Cork won the first Mun-
ster Under-17 hurling championship when they had a seven point win over home side, Water- ford, in the final at a sunny but cold Fraher Field in Dungarvan on Tuesday evening last. Two goals by Owen McCarthy in the second half separated the
sides who were fairly even up to that even though Cork got a dream start with a point from Colin O’Brien and a gem of a goal from Tommy O’Con- nell, all inside the opening two minutes. That start for Cork was
the foundation for this historic win even though
Waterford came back with the advantage of a strong wind after they settled into the game. Points from the influential Iarlaith Daly, John Devine and Kyle Bennett had them chas- ing Cork and were only a point down as we entered the final ten minutes of the game. A goal by Daly from a free, which was misjudged by Cork keep- er, Luke Donovan, put Waterford a point ahead on 25 minutes. A brace of points each let the score with a Waterford advan-
tage at the short whistle. Cork turned to play
with the wind in the sec- ond half and were level after five minutes. They drove on from here with points from Colin O’Brien and a penalty by Tommy O’Connell to put them back in the lead again. The all-important second goal came from McCarthy on 50 minutes when he somehow flicked the ball over the line from a ruck in the Waterford square. Cork opened up a five- point lead and playing
well and while Waterford made a suite of chang- es there was no stopping the Cork momentum. As the clock hit 30 minutes, Owen McCarthy, struck goal number three to put the game out of the reach of the Deise boys. Scores Cork: O. McCa-
