the hour. O’Neills finished the half strongly with three unanswered points in three minutes to leave us trailing by 1-7 to 0-6 at the break. The second half began
like the first with James Moynihan again the first to register a point after three minutes of play and anoth- er veteran Brian Crowley pointing in the 7th
minute.
However, as the half wore on we seemed to retreat into a defensive mode and failed to take advantage of the wind which was now accompanied by sweeping rain. We had to wait until the 21st
but unfortunately there wasn’t enough left on the clock to grab an equaliser. Well done to all in very dif- ficult conditions. Team: Chris Scanlon;

Subs: Brian Crowley, minute for our next
score, a point by Alan Cott from a free which was won by Colman Quinlan. Our chances of collecting the league points on offer were dealt a major setback in the 25th
minute when O’Neills
got in for their second goal. Dan Ruddy and Alan Cott reduced the arrears with a point each before Eoin McGrath did well to squeeze the sliotar past the O’Neills keeper from an acute angle late in the game to reduce the margin to a single point

posts. This was added too quickly when Brian Hartnett received an inch perfect ball from Kieran Walsh who was now roaming the midfield and causing great problems for St Catherines. U14 Camogie Youghal U14’s hosted one
group of the U14A Camo- gie Feile on Saturday 29th April. Youghal were in a very strong group of teams, Sars, St. Finbarrs, Inniscarra and Ballygarvan. The girls competed very well in all 4 games but unfortunately did not progress to the Semi Fi- nals. Best of luck to Sars and St. Finbarrs who qualified. Samanatha Swyane did
an excellent job of Coor- dinating the games for the day and everything went off smoothly. We would like to sincere-
ly thank all the supporters that turned up during the course of the day and to all the parents that provided sandwiches, cakes and re- freshments for the travelling teams. A special thanks to Sandra Kiely, Debbie Walsh and Hilary Crowley for or- ganising the food for the day.

ter 10 minutes. With Cathe- rines knowing now that they were in an almighty battle, the game was to be played out for the next 12 minutes with some fierce physical challenges going in from either side.James Kenefick, Jack McGrath, Kevin Ivers and Daniel Moyinhan were well up for this phase of the game. This is something that you can not get on the training ground and is sure to do us good going for- ward. Catherines were to be first to score after this phase of play and went 3 points ahead before a well won ball from Ruddy found Josh who struck the ball while running on the wing from 50 yards out to reduce it to two. Fur- ther points from a 70 and free were to leave the Rovers going in at half time 0-8 to 0-9 behind. Eoghan O’Sulli- van making his juinior debut and John Paul Ivers were to come on at half time as Rov- ers sought to drive on but were rocked when a mishit shot from a St Catherines free from 40 yards out found its way to the back of the net. Senior Hurling League vs. Bishopstown Youghal travelled to city
team, Bishopstown on Tues- day night last 25th
April for
a Red FM Senior Hurl- ing League fixture. Even though conditions were absolutely freezing a good Youghal crowd travelled to see the Youghal Boys take on mid-table Bishopstown. The game started with
Bishopstown getting two scores before Youghal got a foothold around the middle and started to win some pri- mary possession, delivering direct ball into the Youghal full forward line which paid dividends as Youghal soon took the lead. Youghal’s de- fence also started cleaning up as Bishopstown with- drew a sweeper around the middle to stem Youghal’s dominance but to no avail as the Youghal half backs feed
point to go 5 ahead before Rovers got their shape right and with some excellent de- fending from the back line of Aidan Beausang, Paul Lane and Eoghan O’Sulli- van two frees from Rovers were knocked over after first James Kenefick and then Jack McGrath were fouled out the field. With the game now been played at a high tempo and not a place to be for the faint hearted Rov- ers saw O’Sullivan deliver a perfect ball to Bud who with one look found Josh on the edge of the square who buried the ball to the back of the net and set us up for a very exciting final quarter with the teams level. Rov- ers took the lead following great play by Kevin Ivers at half back winning another ball and starting off a move that saw no fewer than three Rovers touch the ball in a two second period before Bud split the posts. After 20 minutes a great catch from Ross Walsh in the Rovers goal was to see him taken completely out unfairly and saw the offending Cathe- rines player awarded a red
the forwards with accura- cy pushing ahead. Only for Bishopstown scoring a lucky goal Youghal may have been out of sight. The halftime score Youghal 0-9 to Bishop- stown’s 1-4. The second half was
marked by the huge desire of the Youghal team to hunt down every Bishopstown man and turn him over. Bishopstown moved former Cork star Pa Cronin into the middle in the second half to try and gain parity but Youghal chased, hassled and harried in packs. Special mention must go to minor starlet Sean Smiddy who hit two supreme points coming on for the injured James O’Mahony. Youghal were hit for two sucker punches halfway through the second when the referee judging that the ball had crossed the Youghal goal line despite no flag from the umpires (one from each side) and second goal soon followed and it looked like another defeat was on the cards. Indeed, through grit and hard work Youghal plugged away at the deficit eventually drawing level before going one up in injury time and that is how it finished on a scoreline of:

card by Jim Hennessy. When tempers cooled down after this Ruddy after receiving a quick ball from Aidan Beausang pointed to put us two up on 22 minutes. One aspect of the rovers play now was their intelligent passes with no ball being wasted and this was seen in almost all the plays for the last 10 mins. With the rov- ers still fighting for every ball, McGrath after winning his battle found Bud who with still a lot of work to do used his senior experience to round two markers and bellow the back of the net 2-14 to 1-12.With still three minutes to play Ruddy was to score another well worked goal which was started at the back by Eoghan O’Sullivan who was now playing as the spare man,his pass finding Kieran Walsh whose speed on the ball is incredible. This was to be the last score of the game and gave rovers a well deserved win. So many good performances were put in today that I think the man of the match award should go the team. Rovers have shown that they will

Senior Hurling League vs. Bandon After the high of Tuesday
night against Bishopstown, Youghal were brought back down to earth by an energet- ic Bandon team looking to make amends after a heavy defeat to Killeagh the week before. On a fresh Friday night under lights at Mag- ner’s Hill, Bandon started stronger and looked fresher which is understandable as some of the Youghal team was playing their third game in six days (IFC, SHL, SHL). The same energy that
was so vibrant and elegant against was there for Youghal
be a very competitive team this year and a lot of this is down to the panel of players that are training every night. Referee Jim Hennessy com- mented on the great surface of the pitch and whoever is responsible for the this take a pat on the back. Games to Look forward

in the first half. It seemed that the bounce of the ball was just running away from Youghal. However through stout defending Youghal did not concede too much even and were only down by a couple at half time. Certainly, defending was
an important part of the second half as Bandon too tired and Youghal’s battling qualities came to the fore. Both defences cut out the space for each forward line and with every break around the middle hotly contest- ed this was a lively game which while not one for the purists was enthralling in its own right. With Youghal down and pushing hard for the levelling score Bandon picked off a couple of score to pull two ahead into inju- ry time. It looked like this game was a bridge too far for this Youghal team. Then a slick move down the right had the Bandon defence in trouble. Alan Frahill O’Con- nor picked up the ball with fifteen yards to goal; put his head down stepping around a couple of hapless defenders before sticking the ball into the Bandon net. Youghal winning be a point. Shortly Continued on next page
