Mogeely Dairygold Seek Licence to Dump 290 Million Gallons of Wastewater into Cork Harbour Annually

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

East Ferry has become

the focal point of a heat- ed debate about how far a community should go to accommodate

economic

development. Lower Harbour residents

fear their communities will die if Dairygold is given the go ahead to flush 290 mil- lion gallons of wastewater into the harbour annually. Last week the Dairygold lodged

Co-Operative planning

application with

Cork County Council to increase its capacity to pro- duce cheese at

their Mo-

geely site. Part

of the plan is to

construct a 14 kilometre pipe running from Mogeely through to Ratcoursey West (known locally as the head of the ferry), where it will connect to an out fall pipe. If the planning authori-

ty approves the application 3 million

litres of waste-

water containing fats oils and grease (fogs) will be dumped into the Ferry daily. The proposal comes fol-

a

lowing the strengthening of the co-operative’s partner- ship with Norwegian based food producer Tine, earlier this year.

graded all-weather pitch. “It’s

a complete, full

facili-

ty has been with us for 15 years, in

training previous

so it’s a huge part our

teams and the need to up- grade was there due to the amount of use it was get- ting.”
