Midleton U14 boys v C Of I. Friday 9th

december 8pm

away Midleton started well and

after some good play in the first 10 minutes were un- lucky not to score. On the 15th

minute Midleton scored

a well-taken goal by John- ny Spillane after some fine interchanges from Philippe Holme, Olan O’Connor and Ben Duffy . Midleton had a few more

chances from play and short corners but due to some excellent goalkeeping and defending were kept at bay until the

last minute of

the half when Paul Curtin stepped up to give midleton a 2-0 lead. The second half started

well and despite some good opportunities Midleton couldn’t get their third goal. From a break C of I got a goal bringing the scoreline to 2-1with 10 minutes to play. Ben Duffy in centre mid

got a burst of energy with 5 minutes to go beat

four

opposition player and hit a fabulous strike to give mid- leton a 3-1 lead and the re- sult running out the same, Midleton man of the match performance was Phillippe Holme who was outstand- ing in midfield in attack and defence doing an excellent marking job on C or I’s irish U16 trialists, well done to all involved on the panel on the night. Midleton U10 girls went

to their second blitz of the year in Ashton Hockey club playing four matches, losing the 1st

one 2-0 to an Ashton

team, and after that beating another Ashton team 3-0. Their third match was a

very tough game losing out on a 2-0 scoreline to Harle- quins . After a break they played

a Harlequins team drawing 0-0. All players had great fun and had no rain on the day which also helps. panel: Eadoin Rice, Ao-

Midleton

played their second league match of the

U14 boys weekend

against Waterford in Mid- leton

Midleton played excellent hockey in the 1st

10 min-

utes with fantastic passing scoring

three on the 15th goals from

Olan, Johnny Spillane and Philippe . Midleton got their fourth minute with a

fine goal from Olan O’Con- nor, Waterford got a goal back before Johnny spillane made it 5.1 on the stroke of half time. Waterford came at midle-

ton in the second half with two early goals leaving it 5.3 with 20 minutes to go. Mid- leton battled on for the last 20 minutes keeping it to a 5.3 win to midleton despite the huge improvement from Waterford . A great result for midle-

ton U14 boys giving them four straight wins to top the Munster league table with Galway at home and lim- erick and cork harlequins to play away after Xmas . Panel : B Duffy, B King-

ston , O O’Connor , P Cur- tin, J Hall, l O’Driscoll, R Daly , P Holme , B Ryan, N Tyrell , J Spillane, A Carry. Coach / manager : Clive

12-2 Dungarvan B. The Pumas had a fantastic game as they continue to grow in confidence and work well as a team. Emily O’Hara kindly donated prizes for Top Goal scorer awarded to Maeve O’Connor (4) and Best Player went to Aisling Sexton. Other

players to

score were Gaby Olden (1), Isabel Kelly, (1) Aisling Sex- ton (1), Lucy Quirk (2) and

Meadhbh McCarthy (2). Our second game was

Midleton Panthers 0-4 Dungarvan A. This result doesn’t reflect how well the Panthers played. Dungar- van had a couple of very strong players who proved hard to pin down. The Pan- thers fought hard for the full

match and there were op- portunities on goal that they created but

just couldn’t

capitalize on. Prizes for Best Players were Ellie

awarded to Dunhig (goalkeeper

for the match) and to Kate Hanna. Both well deserved. Since September, both

teams are playing and train- ing with huge enthusiasm and team spirit, they should be proud of themselves go- ing into Christmas break.

Mens hockey On December 6th

Mid-

leton travelled to Bandon to play them in the league. Bandon were sitting in top spot with Midleton just a single point behind them. It was a tough cold night and due to the mid week fixture it was a struggle to field a team. From the start Mid- leton began strongly with a goal from Eric Callender in the first two minutes of the game. The team kept sol- id through many attempts from Bandon to get

the

equaliser. After a lot of pres- sure Bandon finally got what they were looking for. As the half time approached Ban- don got themselves 2-1 up. The Midleton defense stood strong but

after constant pressure and even through After the battle on Tues-

day, Midleton played Ban- don once again on Sunday in the Cork Cup. After the previous Tuesday they knew the battle ahead of them. With a solid team and the strongest centre midfield team of the year with Alan Sheehy and Harry Cremin hopes were high. The game got off to a fast start with Midleton holding onto the ball making the

Bandon

team work hard. After start of game nerves Bandon managed to slip through the defense and put it past Liam Mariga in goals to get themselves the lead. After chances at both ends Mid- leton got the breakthrough they needed from a short corner. After a bit of a mis- take from the top the ball managed to sneak into the bottom corner. This

goal

gave the team the boost it needed with many balls go- ing just across goal in front of the

opposition keeper

that just lacked the final touch, coming closest was Ciaran McGregor. Bandon piled on the pressure once

the tough defending from Andrew Levis, Mark Deane and Harry Compton Midle- ton were 3-1 down. As ever Midleton are never a team to stop fighting and man- aged to get a goal back from John Jeffery from a great finish at the back post from a short corner. This brought it to a close one goal game. However Bandon once again struck and the game finished 4-2 in the favour of Bandon.

more in the second half. After numerous saves from Liam Mariga and a strong defence Bandon struggled to get

the chances they

needed. After Bandons fifth short corner they squeezed the ball into the goal. With very little time left Midleton began to feel the pressure. They worked hard and got themselves a short corner of their own but the Bandon keeper somehow managed to deflect the ball outside his post. This felt like the last chance but as ever the spirit and fight that was in Midleton just before the fi- nal whistle got another short corner which Eric Callen- der put in all his strength to force the ball into the goal from the initial save. This brought the game into extra time. Five minutes each way was all that was to be played. Feeling

hopeful Midleton

pushed hard with seriously superhuman defence from Mark Deane to get ahead of his player and win the ball Bandon could not get into the circle. After putting in all they got Midleton ended up giving Bandon the gift of a short corner at the final whistle. The first one was saved only for the umpire to award a second straight

away. It was all down to this to see Bandon win or for the game to go to penalty strokes which could very much go either way. Hoping for strokes to give the team another chance to win and progress in the cup, but sad- ly not to be as a well worked short corner routine put the ball into the Midleton net. Sadly it knocked Midleton out of the second cup this season but still with eyes on winning the league they will fight on.

Ladies hockey On Sunday we travelled

to play Crescent B Limerick. We opened up well scoring in the first five minutes a lovely shot from Nikki Mor- essy. It was a tough match but we managed to hold it

at half time. Ten minutes into the

together leading one-nil second half we

won a short corner with a shot taken by Zara Bowles which the goalie saved and Nicole Read scored off the rebound. We lost concen- tration giving away a short corner with Crescent put- ting a high ball into the net giving our goalie no chance to save. This woke us up and we held it tight to finish the game on a two-one victory.
