in the

Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork. This

year’s Hurling

Hall of Fame goes to Charlie McCarthy of St. Finbarr’s and Cork who has given distinguished service as a player and coach both at club and inter-county level. As a player, he terrorised many corner backs with his daz- zling skills throughout his club and inter-county ca- reer, which lasted the best part of

two decades. He

was a dual inter-county minor, winning a Munster medal in both hurling and football. He captained his Cork to All-Ireland senior glory in 1978 completing a coveted 3-in-a-row of ti- tles for the Rebel County. His honours as an in-

He also captained Munster to Railway Cup glory. At club level his honours in- cluded two All-Ireland, four Munster and five County titles. His record speaks for itself among the greats of Cork and

Galtee Gaels

and Limerick who was an ever present member of the Limerick Senior Foot- ball teams for 14 years from 1991 to 2005. The inspirational midfielder played in the 1991 Mun- ster Senior Football Final against Kerry in Killarney in his first year on the sen- ior team. He was a cor- nerstone of the teams that came so near to winning the Munster Finals of 2003 and 2004. His hero- ic performances merited an All Star nomination in 2002. John represented Mun-

ster in the Railway Cup on numerous

occasions,

a highlight being his con- tribution to the 1999 win. A career highlight was his selection for the

Inter-

national Rules Series in 1999. John won his sole Lim-

erick Senior Football Championship with Gl- encunane Rovers in 1991 and his clean sweep of county medals was com- pleted by Galtee Gaels winning the junior cham- pionship in 1988 and the intermediate title in 1993. A true legend of Lim-

erick football, John will go down as one of the best to have worn the green and white.

Commenting on the announcement

of the

Hall of Fame winners for 2015, Jerry O’Sullivan, Chairman of Munster Council said: “Charlie McCarthy was one of the best forwards ever to play for Cork and played a major role in Cork’s 3 in- a-row successes between 1976 and 78. He also had

a stellar underage career. John Quane will rank as one of the best players never to win a Munster championship although he was agonisingly close on a couple of occasions. He ranks among Limer- ick’s very best footballers. The great

playing skills

and many achievements of both Charlie and John are worthy of recognition and I am delighted to see them honoured with this year’s Hall of Fame awards” Other 2016 award

nal when hitting 2-3 in a man-of-the-match dis- play against

Tipperary.

His superb contribution of 1-4 from play in the All-Ireland semi-final will live long in the memory. A first All Star award fol- lowed. Victory in the All-Ire- land Senior Ladies Football Final this year confirmed the latest achievement in the

in-

credible career of Rena Buckley from Cork. Vic- tory on September 25th brought her All Ireland Senior medal tally to a staggering 17 with 11 in ladies football and 6 in camogie. She

has also

won 11 Munster Ladies Football Senior Cham- pionships and 10 Ladies Football National League Division 1 medals. Suc- cess has also followed on the club front with county, Munster and All Ireland Club titles captured with Donoughmore. Taking over as Manag-

Footballer accolades re- spectively in the

Ladies’ 2016

Munster GAA Awards. The Manager of the Year award goes to Tipperary senior hurling manager, Michael Ryan and the under 21 Hurling Award goes to Austin Gleeson of Waterford. The

awards

will be presented on Sat- urday night at a gala din- ner in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork where all the award winners for 2016 will be honoured. Paul Geaney recovered

from injury to emerge as the stand-out forward of the championship season in Munster. The Dingle player, has already scored 6-48 in 17 championship appearances in the green and gold, 3-15 of that tal- ly coming this Summer past. He was in superb form in the Munster fi-

er in 2016 having served on previous management teams with Liam Sheedy and Eamon O’Shea, Michael Ryan brought plenty of experience and ability to the role. His new responsibilities fell lightly on his shoulders and he guided Tipperary to a sec- ond successive Munster title and then went on to lead them to All-Ireland success with an inspiring performance against old rivals Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. Tipper- ary’s victory put paid to the notion that winning the Munster

champion-

ship was an obstacle to All-Ireland success. Austin Gleeson is one

of the finest young hurlers to have emerged in recent years. He gave fantastic displays for Waterford at under 21 and senior lev- els this year and his under 21 player of the year in Munster award is a fur- ther acknowledgement of the abilities of the GAA / GPA Hurler and Young Hurler of the Year for

2016. Speaking on the an- of these
