Over €245 Raised at the Lisgoold Toy Mass for Children of

Domestic Abuse by LEAH RING Over €245 was raised

and many gifts for children in need were gathered at the annual Lisgoold/ Leamlara Toy Mass for children of domestic vio- lence took place on Sun- day, 11 December. This is the 17th

year the

community have been in- volved in the toy collection and it received great sup- port in the area. Organiser Deirdre Mc- Carthy said:” The Toy

Mass excelled itself this year. Lots and lots of toys were received and also €245 in cash donations. It was an excellent response.” All toys and monies col-

lected will go to children across the city and county of Cork who are victims of domestic abuse. Presents collected for

the children are often the only presents received on Christmas day and have a significant impact on the families’ lives. Mrs McCarthy said: “All

toys go towards children who are victims of do- mestic abuse. They are all Cork based families and it means so much to them.” Deirdre McCarthy was

inspired to begin the toy collection by her own experience as a child of bringing toys to church at Christmas for children in need. The collection has

grown and the community have been very supportive of the event. Mrs McCarthy said:

“It gets bigger and bigger every year. People are very generous and it means so much to the children that get these toys.” She thanked all those

who helped in the prepa- ration of the collection and all members of the community who kindly donated items at the Toy Mass.

“Many thanks to all who

donated in any way. There will be lots and lots of very happy children on Christ- mas morning,” she said.

Glanmire Residents Get a Final Opportunity to View Glashaboy Flood Relief Plan

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

Glanmire residents will

have a final opportunity to view the Glanmire / Sallybrook Flood Relief project and speak with council engineers on Tuesday 20 December. County Council rep-

resentatives will be in attend Vienne Woods ho- tel between 2:00pm and 8:00pm. Designs are also on dis-

play in Glanmire library until 20 December and at the Council offices in Ballinglanna during office hours. Closing date for submissions is 31 January 2017. The project is expect-

ed to begin construction towards the end of 2017. The scheme is being

advanced by Cork Coun- ty Council on behalf of the OPW and is expected to protect 108 properties, of those 78 are private

residents. It’s estimated almost €18million worth of dam- age was caused by flood- ing in the area over the past three years. Ken Leahy Project manager for Ove Arup said the scheme is de- signed with a 50 year li- fecycle and is adaptable to climate change, should rainfall increase and the river levels rise. Construction of the €7million project had

been delayed due to the discovery of Japanese Knotweed. County Engineer Da-

vid Keane said the inva- sive weed had spread to areas intended for con- struction. Glanmire based Inde-

pendent Councillor Ger Keohane said the pro- ject was “long overdue” and that it would provide “much relief to the com- munity and business own- ers.”
