Noticeboard Kickstart Your Job Search with SECAD
Recruitment by VICKI KELLY SECAD in Midleton
launched a kick-start programme back in Oc- tober. The course facili- tators were Margaret Har- tigan and Vicki Kelly. Both brought different element to the courses. Margaret brought her expertise CVs, Cover
in Letters and
Interview Skills and passed on this expertise to the course attendees. Every attendee now has the tech- niques to draw on when it comes to this practical ele- ment of job hunting. This is a skill that can be drawn on for many years to come and ownership of one’s CV brings a confidence to the job seeker. Vicki is a trained ACT (Accept- ance and Commitment Training) coach and she advocated the importance of Values in this job seek- ing endeavour. This was to be an important thread throughout the course and one which was visited and explored weekly. This en- couraged frank discussion and gave the attendees a platform to verbalise where they were at the out- set and where they wanted
to be. The ethos behind this programme was to instil confidence in the at- tendees and give them a supportive environment to start their personal career journey.
As part of the course
another SECAD facilita- tor Kieran Butler brought some useful tips re build- ing your personal online brand to the participants. This was a very interactive morning workshop for all. The use of the SECAD
IT training room was uti- lised and time given to the attendees to design their personal CV. Several large industries
were delighted to facilitate a field trip as an exercise to broaden horizons for the group. A field trip to Novartis was decided on and this was a huge suc- cess and while it initially was to demonstrate to the attendees the benefits of working in the Pharma industry, or indeed any large
industry, and how
such an industry operates it became more than that for the group. Mark Mee- han (head of Training and Development, Novartis) shared his personal career
journey and the interesting path he took from Apple to Novartis, from general operative to manager and this was inspirational for all the group to hear. They were also very to have talent-
fortunate
ed actress and successful business woman Rachel Sarah Murphy to visit for a motivational talk which was another
interesting
aspect to the course. That was a workshop which en- couraged frank discussion and debate as to how we choose to stay or get “un- stuck” in our careers or our career start ups. This generated some new ob- jectives for participants. Mock interviews were
held to promote an aware- ness of practice and re- hearsal for same. All candidates were
offered
a further support of en- gaging with Employment Engagement within SEC- AD and dealing with Vicki in a one to one capacity in the future. This service provides a bridge between potential
employees and
potential employers. The Kick Start course provided the Kick Start it was de- signed to deliver.
Well another year down and SECAD would like to wih everyone a very happy and peacefl Chritma and a properous New Year.
