Coffee morning at Scartleigh National School Raises €1,277 for Cork Simon Community and East Cork Rapid Response
by ALAN SHEEHAN and ANDREA
CUNNINGHAM Scartleigh National
School held a coffee morn- ing and cake sale in aid of Cork Simon Community and East Cork Rapid Re- sponse (ECRR) last Satur- day, 10 December.
The event was host-
ed in the Senior Hall of Scartleigh National School and held from 11am-2pm, with just over €1,200 raised on the day. The profits will be divided between the two Cork Si- mon Community and the ECRR. “It was a great morn-
ing,” said Jackie Smith, one of the organisers of the
event. “We raised
€1,277, which will be split between both groups. It was greatly supported by the local people.” Last year’s coffee morn- ing was organised by Mary Murphy, who enlisted the help of Ms Smith and oth-
ers, raised €1,500 for Cork Simon, which offers hous- ing and support to home- less people in their jour- ney back to independent living. This year’s coffee morning raised for both Cork Simon, and the East Cork Rapid Response, a voluntary group that
re- sponds to life-threatening
scenarios and provides ad- vanced pre-hospital emer- gency medicine. “We had Michael Hayes representing the
there
Rapid Response,” said Ms Smith. “He brought down the vehicle for people to look at and see. It’s the second year we’ve held the coffee morning now. Last
year we raised
€1,500, so that we nearly raised that
again this
year is great.” As well as
coffee and cake, the new East Cork heritage book Times and Tales, written by Charlie Hayes, was on sale, with some of the profits from its sale going to both aforementioned groups. Mr Hayes was also be present to sign copies of the book. “Once we’ve

two years,” said Ms Smith, “we’ll be sure to keep it going now. Once people support it one year they’ll support
it the next, so
the crowd gets bigger. That said, there was a lot on around the place on Thursday, but people and the you
the local people
knew would come
supported us very well. We’re delighted with what we raised, and it’s nice to have people from the com- munity come and meet up before Christmas.”
