Shanagarry ICA Christmas Party A Reward Night For All Members and Attendees
by ALAN SHEEHAN and ANDREA
CUNNINGHAM Shanagarry Irish Coun-
trywomen’s Association (ICA) guild held its annual Christmas part at Garryvoe Hotel last Thursday, 8 De- cember. The 30 or so attendees,
both members and friends, began proceedings with a
mulled wine reception in the library of Garryvoe Hotel, where
they sat
around the fire with the sur- rounding room and Christ- mas tree adorned in lights. “There was 30 of us,”
said Rosaline Dunne of the Shanagarry ICA, “sat around the fire. It was lovely with the tree and the lights. Then were had a finger food buffet upstairs. Each
year each of us brings a gift for a friend, and you get a gift in return. We had a raf- fle too, and the finger food, tea, coffee, and mince pies were all lovely. We sat at round tables, about ten of us to each one, all dressed- up and wearing paper hats, and had a nice chat and told funny stories, and fun- ny ones about Christmas.” Shanagarry ICA has
been together as a guild for 30 years, and like other guilds in the ICA convenes regularly for activities, such as to hear guest speakers or watch guest performers. The guild’s Christmas par- ty wasn’t much different. “We had a surprise guest
too,” said Ms Dunne. “Get this; a belly dancer from Glanmire, called Noreen. She was great. Such a great
character. She performed a demonstration with scarves and belts and such, and then we were all invited to take part. It was great fun. I should say there was no flesh shown of course, but it was great fun. People really enjoyed it and the atmos- phere was great.” The ICA is the largest
women’s association in Ireland, with more
than
10,000 members and over 500 guilds across the coun- try, with guilds ranging from a handful of members to over 120. Each guild is autonomous, and takes part
in activities which interest its specific members. Those interested are encouraged to visit
the ICA’s website,
www.ICA.ie, for further in- formation and to find your nearest guild, with guilds operating in Shanagarry, Midleton, and Cobh. “It was good fun,” said Ms Dunne. “We’ve spent 30 years together as a guild in Shanagarry. We meet on the second Mon- day of every month at the GAA hall in Shanagarry, and anybody, of any age, is welcome to come along. We’re very welcoming. We

have guest speakers, craft classes, we keep fit, and we take a few trips each year. We have guest speakers in who’ll
demonstration or
go over things like makeup, fashion, Pilates, firefighting, road safety, whatever any- body might be interested in. We’re very supportive too; it’s a great
friend-
ship support network. We stretch from Garryvoe to Shanagarry to Chruchtown South and Cloyne, even as far as Ladysbridge. Our nearest ICAs are Midleton and Cobh who are both very active.”
