East Cork Christmas Market in Aid of East Cork Rapid Response Raises Almost €2,000

by LEAH RING The East Cork Christ-

mas Market in the Gar- ryvoe Hotel on Sunday, 11 December raised almost €2,000 in aid of the East Cork Rapid Response. Co-Organiser

Mary

Griffin said: “It all went really, really well. It was hugely well attended and

we were all delighted to raise

almost €2,000 for

the East Cork Rapid Re- sponse.” The market has been running for a number of years now and stall hold- ers from across East Cork get involved. Mrs Griffin explained:

“There was a massive variety of stalls this year

with home baking, gluten free baking, ceramics, all kinds of things. We had a man selling fantastic coins and a couple of guys do- ing some beautiful wood- work. Orla O’Rourke was selling the most amazing pottery and Darina and Rory Allen had a stall… There was just so much there on the day.”

Along with this, a num-

ber of stalls sold Christ- mas gifts, including deco- rations, hand knitted toys and dolls and some sweet treats for all the last min- ute shoppers still search- ing for the perfect present. “It was really nice to see

so many involved and new people, who had never at- tended the event before,

were really blown away by the quality of everything available,” Mrs Griffin said. Five years ago a group friends from the area

of

came up with the idea and began recruiting people from across the communi- ty to get involved. Mrs Griffin explained:

“We were a group of about 5 or 6 who just got together through garden- ing. We

started selling

our own gardening things on Sundays in summer outside the church and it

went from there and mor- phed into a Christmas market.” Three

years ago the

event moved to the Gar- ryvoe and has expanded annually since. Mrs Griffin explained:

“It is fantastic. It started off with six friends and now we have about 60 stallholders. We keep it all as local as possible, with products as local as pos- sible and all coming from small businesses.” The group hope to help promote local companies

and give small businesses a chance at

the annual

market. “It gives people a

chance to showcase their work. Many of them wouldn’t have another outlet to do that,” Mrs Griffin said. The

mittee of the East Cork Christmas Market cerely ryvoe

organising com- sin-

thanked the Gar- Hotel for their

generosity and assistance along with the stall hold- ers and members of the community who attended.
