Comedy Play in Aid of Ballycroneen National School This Weekend
by LEAH RING Ballycroneen National
School and Parents’ As- sociation brings audiences ‘Fruitcake’ a play by Alice Barry. The play will run on
Friday, 16 December and Saturday, 17 December at 8pm in Ballycroneen Na- tional School Hall. Secretary of the school, Ann Dorgan acts as the protagonist in this one woman show that
will
help earn much needed funds for the school. Mrs Dorgan has been
involved in acting and the- atre over the past 30 years and previously starred in the Calendar Girls in the Everyman Theatre. She said: “We had been
trying to think of what we could do that would be a bit different to fundraise for the school. I knew Alice Barry and she had written ‘Fruitcake’. It had been shown around the country with Mary McE- voy playing the lead and I thought we could do that.” The show tells the sto-
ry of a woman hosting a cooking
demonstration.
She is creating a fruitcake and as she explains to rec- ipe for the classic cake she begins divulging secrets from her life.
Mrs Dorgan explained:
“We start to learn stories from her life, the challeng- es she faces and although, not all of her experiences are funny the show is very light hearted.” The play hopes to make
audiences laugh and cry at the experiences of this extraordinary woman. “We’ve
been practic-
ing, me and the director, for the past 6 weeks and it has been difficult doing it alone but a great chal- lenge. The show is just an hour long and I am real- ly looking forward to the audience’s reaction now,” Mrs Dorgan said. On the night there will light
be refreshments,
mulled wine and parents will be bring home baked fruit cakes. Ballycroneen National
School is a two-teacher school with just 35 pupils currently attending. It is one of two national
schools in the Cloyne area and all proceeds from the night will go towards the school for essential items. The show is €10 per
person and tickets can be purchased at Cloyne Post Office and Churchtown Post Office. For more
