David Stanton Addresses 4th Missing Persons Day Ceremony
Cork East Fine Gael
TD and Minister of State at the Department of Jus- tice and Equality, David Stanton welcomed fam- ilies and friends of miss- ing persons to the fourth National Missing Persons Day ceremony on the 7 December. The event
is
held on the first Wednes- day of December every year at Farmleigh. “It was a privilege to in
participate friends this of event
which gives the families and
missing
persons an opportunity to commemorate their loved ones and share their expe- riences. National Missing
Persons Day not only pro- vides recognition for the ongoing suffering of peo- ple whose loved ones are missing but also provides an opportunity to raise public awareness of the numbers that go missing but also to highlight the support services available to people who have lost a loved one”, noted Minister Stanton. “When I was Chair-
person of the Oireachtas Justice Committee I vis- ited Davis College to at- tend an event organised by students who had run a ‘Forget Me Not’ campaign to highlight the plight of
families whose loved one had gone missing. Follow- ing this the Committee held a number of hearing and produced a report, for the former Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter TD, recommend- ing the establishment of a National Missing Person’s Day. Since
ment I have been pleased to attend the
its establish- event
in
Farmleigh every year. “This event was attend-
ed not just by families and friends of missing persons but also by a large num- ber of voluntary organi- sations including National Missing Persons Helpline,
Searching for the Missing, WAVE Trauma Centre, the Irish Coast Guard and many other whose hard work, support and dedica- tion are invaluable to peo- ple trying to deal with the trauma of a missing loved one.
“The event was also an
opportunity to thank the many members of An Garda Siochana who are involved in the gation of
missing person
cases such as the Missing Persons Bureau, Family Liaison Officers, and local Gardaí. Forensic Science Ireland also contributed to the event and hope that
investi-
Thursday, 15th National Youghal Briefs Weekend Rota for Youghal Pharma-
the establishment of a Na- tional DNA Database will assist An Garda Siochana in missing persons’ cases. “I am delighted that the
National Missing Persons Day is such a well-attend- ed and successful event each year. There is huge value in attendees sharing experiences with other families who have gone through similar trauma. It is also important
for
the wider community to remember those who are missing and the very dif- ficult situation faced by family and friends missing loved ones”, concluded Minister Stanton.

Now one of the estab-
lished highlights of the region’s Summer calen- dar, the Ardmore Pat- tern Festival is known for delivering a fun mix of great
family entertain-
ment every July. Centred around St. Declan’s (the patron - or ‘pattern’ - saint of Ardmore) feast day on the 24 July, the modern festival began 10 years ago when local volunteers established a committee to deliver an inclusive and enjoyable communi- ty festival for locals, holi- day-makers and visitors. The result has been the multi-award-winning Pat- tern Festival which has seen thousands delight at
the sights, sounds and
spectacles every July. Having carefully grown
the festival for a decade, the original committee has now decided that the next steps in the journey should be taken by an entirely new group of volunteers, and the process of a suc- cessful hand-over has now been completed. “We’re
incredibly for-
tunate to have had such a fantastic team drive the Ardmore Pattern Festival for the past
ten years”,
says Nonie Rix, incom- ing Chairperson of the new committee. “They’ve handed over a festival with a reputation that’s second-to-none, finances that couldn’t be in better shape, and insights that
will prove invaluable
many years to come.” While
for it’s all change
for the committee now charged with delivering future Pattern Festivals, those with a love for the July event (of which there are many!) can rest sured that
as- the elements
they love will continue to be there for them. “Our new commit-
tee is drawn from people who’ve grown up with the Pattern Festival and love it just as much as anyone who’s come along to the event over the past
ten
years” added Nonie. “So much of the current festi- val works perfectly well so there’s no reason at all to change it. In terms of size,
it’s pretty much at capac- ity right now so we’re fo- cusing on how we can try to make things just that lit- tle bit better, not bigger.” One of the first things the new committee
did
was to conduct a large survey into the public’s thoughts, opinions and comments on the festival. The responses exceeded their expectations and will now greatly inform how they deliver future festi- vals. The dates for the 2017
Ardmore Pattern Festival have now been confirmed as Monday 24 to Sunday 30 July, with planning al- ready well advanced. However,
