INTRO

The last time we embarked on an extensive special feature like this, was before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Though the subject of Euro 2012 is the same, the locations, infrastructure and involved parties are very different. Where the South African installations were almost exclusively handled by one company, the stadia that will be used for Euro 2012 have been prepared by several companies, each representing a different stable of manufacturers.

The Euro 2012 embryo was split from its inception. Poland and Ukraine decided to join forces in 2003 and delivered a bid in 2005, which in April 2007 beat off competition from Italy to secure their dual host status. As ever, there is a political story, which is worthy of the curious mind. But we’ll focus on what we know, and talk about the technological stories of each of the eight stadia. I was lucky enough to travel to Ukraine, with EVI Audio. Our time was split between Kiev and Lviv, where we visited the Olympic Stadium and Arena Lviv respectively. Our hosts were Sound House Pro, who completed the audio and comms installations. Thanks to them, my education stretched beyond the stadia. Those two stadia account for a quarter of the venues that will be used during the competition. Two more Ukranian arenas - in Kharkiv and Donetsk - and four in Poland - Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan - complete the line-up. This guide will look at all eight, in an unsystematic order.

Perhaps the most lasting sentiment that I’ll take from talking to those involved in the various projects, is one of pride. I’ve witnessed it on various levels - be it the installer putting involvement before profit, or manufacturer that recognises the symbolic value in being part of such a prestigious happening. When these ‘once in a lifetime’ events happen, all rational tends to make an inconspicuous exit from the conscience.

For me, these are the exciting moments in life. When nothing else matters but being involved and enjoying the enduring pride that follows. That’s the reason why a local distributor submits tender after tender, taking what he has learned from the previous processes and applying it to the next - and getting success. In my eyes, that combination of determination, patriotism and pride, is admirable. I’d like to finish off by saying well done to all the people who have been involved in these projects. I’m looking forward to watching the tournament, knowing better than most the amount of work that has gone into getting the stadia ready.
