MLA COMPACT NANTES

On Monday 23 April, the new Martin Audio MLA Compact made its debut in Nantes, France. The launch was carried out by the company’s French distributor Al- gam, alongside support from Martin Audio HQ in the form of Export Sales Manager Martin Kelly, R&D Director Jason Baird and new recruit Andy Davies, Application Support for Touring.

The product demonstration of the MLA Compact took place at Le Zenith Metropole, an 8,500-capacity venue. A biennial tradeshow organised by Algam, was deemed the perfect platform for the launch. Algam invited customers and dealers to the Ho- tel Westotel where they spent two days learning and sampling products from Martin Audio, Avid, Chauvet, HK Audio, MediaMatrix, Panasonic and Shure, all brands that are distributed by Algam. The hotel’s expo facilities allowed the products to be dis- played in a tradeshow format. Live audio and lighting demonstrations also took place inside the onsite amphitheatre, but for the launch of the MLA Compact, Algam felt a larger venue was necessary to display the full capabilities of the system. A total of 24 MLA Compact cabinets were flown at Le Zenith Metropole, 12 per side, left and right of the stage, while the 12 DSX subwoofers were positioned in a broadside array with cardioid elements to provide smooth horizontal coverage and rejection of bass onstage.

Jason Baird began to explain the new system: “MLA Compact is a fully integrated, powered, networked, computer controlled system.” Each 3-way MLA Compact has a peak output capability of 135dB for low frequencies, 135dB for the midrange

and 135dB to cover high frequencies, when measured at 1metre. The LF section comprises two 10-inch neodymium drivers in a hybrid configuration. The two 5 inch mids and four 0.7 inch HF drivers are loaded on separate 100°x10° constant directivity horns.

Jason continued: “Each MLA Compact has five channels of amplification with DSP processing onboard, with those channels split over LF (1), MF (2, 3) and HF (4, 5) . The driver signal to each cell within the MLA Compact array is numerically optimised by computer to give amazing consistent results across the audience surfaces.” The fact that the MLA Compact is also able to change coverage patterns electroni- cally is what makes this product really stand out. This was the main focus for the demonstration. Jason explained the different optimisations that were heard on the day, which had been pre-programmed using DISPLAY2.1 intelligent software. “The first optimisation will cover the entire arena, from five metres in front of the flown array up to the curtain at the rear. We’ve also set an SPL profile over the venue so from the reference position we are 2dB louder towards the front and 3dB quieter towards the back. Electronically, we are going to reduce the coverage of the back seats and we will be able to switch to that live while the music is running and you will hear the coverage disappear at the back of the room. We can adjust this coverage without affecting the frequency responses anywhere else in the audio. “In the next optimisation we will demonstrate putting a hole in the coverage in the centre of the seating area,” he continued. The hole essentially means the customers
