what to do you really have to think about the kind of performance it is. There is a lot to think about in the design process, a lot of param- eters to take into consideration, what do we want to do, what do we want the audience to feel.”
The Stagetracker system works with sound effects as well as voices. In 2011 TTA embarked upon a collaboration with Figure 53’s QLab software. QLab now has its own component within the Stagetracker FX system, which has playback and control capabilities. The Staget- racker Cue, as it is known, can move a sound effect from one area of the stage to another with the help of the Audio Matrix for localisation. The Stagetracker FX then ensures the sound is delivered smoothly and naturally with the uses of delay.
Jonas explained further: “The fact that QLab could suddenly handle live inputs made it a perfect playback system. By communicating with TTA we were given the possibility to control a live audio signal from within QLab, that is definitely a benefit from the collaboration, which gives you 32 outputs for drag and drop [programming].” Having recently visited a number of other theatrical houses in Scan- dinavian, it is clear that going to watch a play or musical remains a popular past time in the region. Each house is constantly looking for new ways to improve its facilities. The fact that Copenhagen Opera House sits directly across the water from The Playhouse is also exemplary of this fact. To have one house designed specifically for musical theatre and one for dramatic performance indicates that a compromise into one house that would have catered for both perfor- mance options was not considered sufficient. A positive element derived partly from that decision is the imple- mentation of the SOR technology. With such a prestigious project now flying the flag for this theory, both Karsten and Jonas are sure it will begin to change the way sound designers think in the future. Flemming Sorensen of TTA concluded: “SOR is spreading and it will become more and more specified because the directors are starting to hear it is doing something good for their performances.”
