The DVA T12 is

definitely the product with the most

innovation, both in

terms of electronic and acoustic-mechanical, and it gives me so much satisfaction.

CLAUDIO OTTANI R&D DIRECTOR FOR DB TECHNOLOGIES

You’ve been with dB Technologies for a while, what first attracted you to the job? I joined dB Technologies when I was 20 years old (1985). I was looking for a company in the electronics industry to feed my desire for experience in this field.

How has your job role changed from when you first began to the present day? From 1985 to now everything has changed. Back then I had no experience, I had to earn the esteem and confidence by studying and working hard. My main background is in electronics, components and materials, but I started working on digital technology eight years ago; and even now, I am constantly learning new skills.

You are in charge of R&D for dB Technologies, which product do you deem to be your best creation? Hard to say... in every product we design, there are always innovative solutions that are necessary to create a product at a competitive price, but sometimes these innovations are not visible to the customer. The DVA T12 is definitely the product with the most innovation, both in terms of electronic and acoustic-mechanical, and it gives me so much satisfaction.

The year of 2007 marked a turning point for dB Technologies, as this is when the brand really stepped out from behind its parent company (AEB). What changes did this provoke within the company? dB Technologies has always been a trade name of

AEB Industriale, nothing has changed there. Perhaps the real difference was the launch of DVA T4 line array, and dBTechnologies has developed from being a purely MI manufacturer to having a presence in the pro audio market. Becoming a player on the bigger stage has meant we have had a wider range of design ideas to work with.

Some of dB Technologies’ newest products have really taken off in the market, why do you think these products have been so popular? I think that consumers have begun to understand our design philosophy. dB Technologies offers solutions to real problems, we study the need first and then with the help of technology, we can create the product with the right value for money. My friends at rental companies for example told me that they wanted more power from their sound systems, more flexibility and scalability at a price to help them get a quick return from their investment. DVA T12 was born out of this concept, allowing them to use their current T4 stock as downfills or additional speakers. Many of the big brands are using our approach, this means that we must have the right idea.

You’ve been heavily involved with the creation of digipro - the trademark for the digital amplifier technology used in all products across the RCF Group - what is the reason behind the invention of this new technology? digipro is the name of leading edge technology digital amplifiers that we designed in dB Technologies a few years ago for our active speakers. We wanted

to avoid using expensive OEM amps - which we had done in the past - to reduce the cost of development. So my colleague Massimo Minelli and I spent a summer studying digital amplification together, and now we make our own to our exact requirements. We are currently using second generation which has improved performance again, and G3 is in the pipeline.

Where would you like to see dB Technologies in 10 years time? I personally would like to see dB Technologies among the big names in sound reinforcement, and I think that if I can achieve the projects I have in mind, it could be possible.

If you had not chosen to work in the audio industry, what do you think you’d be doing career wise? Even when I am not working I love to take things apart. I even dismantled my wife’s vacuum cleaner to understand filter technology, but it is probably best for her if this passion stays in the workplace. I would definitely choose to work in the field of robotics, where there is an abundance of electronic and mechanical design.

What’s the best achievement in your life to date? Finding a company to work for that allows me to see my designs made into reality - even when some of my ideas seem radical. A total of 20,000 DVA T4’s have been sold, so I guess plastic line array doesn’t seem such a crazy idea now does it?
