two manufacturers who have really taken onboard the concern for noise and those were Barco and Panasonic.” After meeting Lotta at ISE in Amsterdam last year, Klaus voiced his opinion about the need for quiet projectors and Lotta offered to demo the Barco RLM- W8’s at the National Theatre. Klaus said: “The decibel numbers are not really very helpful, you need to hear them for yourself in the environment you intend to use them.” He continued: “I would also say that the service from Barco is really great, I now have direct contact with Lotta and she provides me with direct contact to the technicians, so if I have any issues I can send an SMS to Martin Wood or Fouad Mohafer, that is really great.” Klaus is presently using front projection at the theatre, although as part of the modernisation he is looking into options for back projection. He is also working with shadows, projecting them onto a black screen, something that would perhaps be considered difficult as black is such a poor reflector of light, and indeed it is. A large part of achieving a black-on-black projection successfully is down to the Barco RLM-W8’s and their capabilities. The lighting design is also an important factor, the lighting designer must focus the lighting in the side areas of the stage reducing the amount of light that bounces off the black surface and interferes with the projection. The projections are configured and operated via a Dataton Watchout media server. The multi-display production and playback system allows Klaus to configure projections using still images, animations, graphics, or video files. Its compatibility with a variety of projection surfaces is another feature that Klaus makes use of at the theatre. While it seems that video has played a part at the National Theatre for a number of years, in its current form, it essentially has just one option - front projection. But once the modernisation is complete, and new visual equipment has been purchased, this historic theatre will be given a new lease of life. It may well have lead the way for video a few years ago, but it has since been overtaken. The combination of the old theatre and the new technology is sure to help it win back some of that status though. www.nationaltheatret.no

“We had to invest in the equipment and that was

really the start.Once the Norwegian directors saw the results of video

integration, they started to use it as well.”
