Sitting atop the world, the Arctic is a dramatic region of ice, water and wildlife. Home to polar bears, walruses, seals and whales, it is a vast ice-covered ocean fringed by Greenland, Canada, Russia & Scandinavia. In the midst of it we fi nd the islands of Svalbard, glacier covered lands of mountains and fjords.

SVALBARD Deep inside the Arctic Circle and part of Norway, Svalbard is an archipelago of islands, the largest of which is Spitsbergen. The islands are home to striking scenery and a diverse range of wildlife as well as the most northerly human population on the planet. Sculpted by repeated ice ages, 60% of the islands are covered by glaciers that tumble down from the mountains through valleys and fjords, lit up in summer by the famous midnight sun. You’ll hear tales of Viking legends and, as you explore, you’ll fi nd a variety of wildlife including arctic foxes, reindeer, seals, walruses and magnifi cent polar bears.

WHAT TO EXPECT The Arctic in the summer is an inviting place, with long and relatively warm days, with summer temperatures averaging between 3º-7º degrees. However you should be prepared for cold days and potentially rough seas at times. A degree of personal fi tness will enable you to fully enjoy the opportunities to go ashore.

Sea kayaking is an option if you want to venture onto the water.

Experience the amazing views of the mountains and numerous fjords as you cruise around the island. A series of shore & Zodiac excursions offer you the chance to understand the history of the area, from the earliest discoverers of the islands, to the old whaling stations and the current scientifi c bases.
