LAND VISITS

A highlight of any Antarctic expedition is setting foot on the vast white continent. Landings are generally made by small Zodiac boats (rigid infl atable boats). All of our options to Antarctica provide you with the chance to go ashore each day you’re there (weather permitting), to explore the continent and its islands. Options will range from sitting on the shoreline watching penguins and meandering walks over the snow and ice, to longer hikes that give you the chance to venture further afi eld. Your time on land can be maximised by opting for a smaller vessel with fewer passengers.

ACTIVITIES

As well as supporting land visits, the Zodiac boats provide a superb way to see Antarctica, from cruising around icebergs or exploring the bays and coves seeking out Antarctica’s rich array of marine mammals. Some of our ships also offer optional activities, including overnight camping and sea kayaking which provides a more natural way to explore your surroundings.

ANTARCTIC PENINSULA The peninsula is the northernmost part of Antarctica, jutting out from the rest of the continent and provides a wealth of islands and bays for your ship to visit. The beaches and shoreline are a haven for seals and breeding penguins during the Antarctic summer, and the deep bays, carved out by glaciers and icebergs, provide a perfect feeding ground for various species of whales.

SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS The South Shetland Islands offer a fi rst, tantalising and rewarding glimpse of Antarctica. A chain of islands lying to the north of the peninsula, they include Elephant Island, the refuge of Ernest Shackleton and his crew in 1916 and Deception Island, whose fl ooded centre offers one of the safest harbours in Antarctica.

SOUTH GEORGIA & FALKLAND ISLANDS Beautiful and dramatic, South Georgia is a mountainous island in the midst of the Southern Ocean that is home to vast numbers of majestic King penguins as well as other breeds of penguin. Whilst not as mountainous as South Georgia, the rugged Falkland Islands are the perfect breeding ground for over 60 species of birds and 5 penguin species.

Comments Our

“I’d dreamt of visiting Antarctica for years and it more than lived up to my dreams. The shapes of the icebergs were incredible and I was in awe of the humpback whales that swam past us whilst kayaking. My visit to Antarctica is something I’ll always remember with a big smile.”
