EXPLORING THE AMAZON
The second largest river in the world, the Amazon is a giant tropical forest and river basin and home to more than one-third of all the species in the world. It is the richest tropical rainforest in the world in terms of natural and cultural diversity, including indigenous tribes, pink dolphins and some 4000 species of birds. The Amazon is best visited from Ecuador, Peru or Brazil and can be easily combined with tours in each country.
AMAZON, ECUADOR From Ecuador, the opportunities for spotting wildlife are excellent at the lodges which use local indigenous communities as guides. They have an unrivalled ability to spot kingfishers or to locate the river dolphins. Access to the Amazon is by road or by a short flight from Quito to Coca and then by boat to one of the jungle lodges tucked away in the rainforest.
AMAZON, PERU
Puerto Maldonado which is a short flight from Cuzco or Lima offers the best opportunity to explore the Peruvian Amazon. The jungle here is home to lazy rivers and oxbow lakes which are abundant with wildlife. Common sightings are of capybara, parrots, tapir and the pre-hoatzin bird which frequent the clay licks.
AMAZON, BRAZIL The two rivers that are adjacent to Manaus, the Rio Solimões and the Rio Negro, merge to form what we know as the mighty Amazon River. The meeting of the two rivers is well worth a visit. The area is home to a number of excellent lodges such as the Amazon Village or the Amazon Eco-Park where a stay is enriched with walks with biologist guides and boat trips along the peaceful rivers.
RIVER JOURNEYS Travelling on a river boat affords the opportunity to spot wildlife from the comfort of some truly luxurious and unique vessels. Skiffs ply the waters from the boats to enable excursions to the riverbanks whilst panoramic windows give 360 degree views over the surrounding rainforest and its tributaries. We offer a variety of boats based in Peru, Ecuador and Brazil.
LODGES Lodges offer the best opportunities for exploring the Amazon rainforest. Even the most ardent wildlife enthusiast will be impressed with the variety of experiences they offer. Under the guidance of naturalists, the nature trails offer a variety of birds and species of monkey and sloth whilst a tranquil canoe trip offers the opportunity to spot caiman and shore birds. Those looking for a more “under the skin” experience can choose to stay with a local community.
