GSCE English Language We normally expect all applicants to hold a Level 2 qualification in English language such as GCSE English at Grade C or above. Some courses will require higher grades.


Typical Offer When you are checking entry requirements for specific programmes, you will see that we show a ‘typical offer’; please note that this is for guidance only and may change. Entry to our courses is very competitive, so being predicted the grades indicated does not guarantee an offer.


Access Programmes We welcome applicants with Access to HE qualifications. You will need to check the requirements for individual courses.


AS We will take AS grades into account when we decide whether to make an offer, but this will be in conjunction with predicted A level grades.


BTEC National Diplomas & Certificates Many of our departments will consider applicants with relevant BTEC qualifications, with entry requirements


English Language Requirements


In addition to satisfying the entrance requirements, non-native speakers must produce evidence of proficiency in the use of the English language. These are some of the qualifications we accept (please note that these are minimum requirements that satisfy English language requirements, for some courses, academic requirements are above this minimum):

IELTS & TOEFL The usual requirement for an Undergraduate programme is a minimum of IELTS 6.5 although a few courses accept 6.0 and some linguistically demanding programmes require 7.0. Please check the department’s entry qualifications carefully for your chosen course.

Cambridge Pre-U We welcome applicants applying either with the full diploma or individual elements of it. Offers are likely to be based on the Principal Subjects that you are taking.


Advanced Diplomas We welcome applicants with Advanced Diplomas. Check the individual course details to find out which lines of learning are acceptable and what Additional/ Specialist learning is required.


European Baccalaureate We welcome students holding the European Baccalaureate. Offers are likely to be in the range of 75%-85% with specified scores in key subjects.


Extended Project We regard this qualification as excellent preparation for higher education study. If you are doing an Extended Project, please


make sure you tell us about it in your personal statement.


International Baccalaureate The University of Bath has a long experience of the International Baccalaureate and views it very positively. Many courses require specific subjects and grades at Higher level.


Welsh Baccalaureate We welcome applications from students offering the Welsh Baccalaureate. Offers are likely to range from the Core plus AA at A level to the Core plus BB at A level, although some of our most competitive courses may ask for additional qualifications.
