Economics

37 www.bath.ac.uk/economics Placements

The University of Bath has a long and valued history of cooperation with government, industry and research organisations, and we are proud that our programmes achieve the integration of practical experience and theoretical study. Industrial training is an option on all three of our programmes.

We select placements carefully to give practical experience in the use of economics and regularly place students with prestigious companies and organisations, including the Bank of England, HM Treasury, HSBC, J P Morgan, PricewaterhouseCoopers and BP plc. Placements, which are most often paid, are chosen in consultation with the Placements Officer, though each student must satisfy the requirements of each employer’s selection process.

Students benefit enormously from a placement and employers also value them highly and are keen to recruit graduates who have a good degree from a good university and experience in the work place.

because I have always been interested in how the economy functions. Seeing what I learnt being used in the real world allows me to understand the applications of the theory. What drew me to Bath was its emphasis on a placement year. I completed my placement with the Bank of England. It gave me an opportunity to work closely with economists and expand my understanding of how economic policies are developed and what their effects are.

I was able to research the Northern Rock crisis in 2008 and formulate what can be done to prevent such a scenario occurring in the future. This experience has provided me with a taste of what economics is all about.
