Around 50% of our students choose to go on placement, including many of our top students. The Department has long-standing links with many leading companies and organisations throughout Britain and Europe. Frequent placement hosts in the UK include BAE Systems, MBDA, National Physical Laboratory, Rutherford Appleton Laboratories and Sharp Laboratories Europe.
Abroad, placements have included the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research, Davos, the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Physics in Stuttgart, ESRF and ILL in Grenoble, and Siemens in Munich. Students normally receive a salary while on placement; they may be given sponsorship by their employer in their final year, or may receive a job offer from the host company.

Department at the University of Bath. All the staff were friendly and welcoming which made finding help with tricky questions easy. The diverse module options in my fourth year meant that I could study modules from the Education Department; a career path I was considering. Once I’d made the decision to follow a career as a teacher there was no question where I would complete my PGCE - Bath. I am now a physics teacher at a large secondary school in the Lake District. In my job I try to support and inspire the pupils that I teach, the same way I was inspired at Bath.

The combination of very good tuition in a quantitative field and a practical work experience placement helped me define my career objectives. Additionally, up-to-date IT facilities and excellent feedback from the teaching staff allowed me to gain the skills needed to start my career in finance in the city of London where I currently hold a trading position.
