The Bath experience – a student helper’s perspective
Lisha Lim Lisha is a student volunteer with Amity, our mentoring scheme which matches current UK and new international students.
What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Bath? There’s a lot of subject support available within the University departments and also a lot of support outside your degree subject. There is a wonderful community within the University and the University does a lot to ensure that international students are catered for.
What was the hardest thing you found adjusting to when you first arrived at Bath? I found the hardest thing was the absence of family and being alone in an unfamiliar environment. Additionally, finding my way around Bath was quite difficult for the first few weeks.
Why did you volunteer as a mentor for the Amity programme? I became an Amity mentor because I believe it is an amazing opportunity to make friends with international students and be able to support them through British university life.
What have you learned from your experience with Amity? Amity has been a great way to befriend international students and to find out more about cultural differences.
I have also learnt and can now appreciate more deeply the difficulties that international students have when they encounter a culture that is vastly different from the one that they have grown up in.
Are you member of any other clubs or societies? I am part of the Christian Union, which organises Globe Café for international students. I am also part of SCA (Student Community Action), which organises volunteering opportunities for students.
How ‘international’ is the Bath campus? Extremely international! Through serving free lunch to international students in Globe Café, I’ve discovered that there are so many students from a variety of different countries. During the past week, I have met students from Argentina, Mexico, Japan, China, Malaysia, France, and so many many more.
What advice would you give to international students about how to make the most of their time at Bath? Get stuck into the many societies and sports that are available on campus. Come to Globe Café to talk to other international students, practise your English and eat lunch (different themes each week!). Get an Amity mentor, who can show you the various interesting aspects of British Culture.
language level and the university English language requirement. Minimum IELTS score at entry 5.0.
