and Vector Biology MSc (one year full-time or two to three years part-time)
3 good reasons to study Molecular Parasitology and Vector Biology at Salford • Opportunity for UK/EU students to undertake funded research in Malaysia • An innovative, collaborative MSc programme taught jointly by the Universities of Salford, Manchester and Keele • Received top rating in Quality Assurance Agency audit
Programme details
This programme focuses on the molecular aspects of parasitic infections and on vector biology and control.
It aims to give you a sound insight into the biology of parasitic diseases and their control and provides you with contemporary studies of research on immunological and molecular aspects of selected parasites and vector/parasite relationships. You will also gain training in research techniques appropriate to parasitology and entomology.
Initial teaching is based primarily at Salford and is undertaken by staff from all three institutions. You will then be able to carry out an extensive research project at one of the three universities.
Module titles
Semester 1: • Immunology of Parasitic Infections • Vector Biology and Control • Molecular Biology of Parasites • Core Parasitology and Vector Biology
Semester 2: • Research Skills Applications • Analytical Parasitology
Funding is available for a number of students who have performed well in their first semester exams to go to the Universiti Sains in Penang, Malaysia to undertake their research project.
Suitable for
This programme is for UK and international graduates who wish to enter research, teaching, scientific laboratory management and careers in parasitology including diagnostic centres and overseas field centres.
Career potential
Many graduates from this MSc programme go on to do a PhD. Others have entered employment as research assistants or research laboratory technicians in pharmaceuticals, drug design and pesticide research. Other careers have included pollution microbiologists with water authorities, and work in hospital laboratories investigating the haematology, molecular biology and immunology of infectious diseases.
