REACHING FULL POTENTIAL

Last year, I came to IBC for the first time in five years. Being from the country that endeavoured to launch 8K broadcasting before the previous Olympic Games, I must admit that I felt some disappointment when I realised, though half expected, that there’s almost no one talking about 8K technology (we, Astrodesign, have been positioning ourselves as ‘8K evangelists’ in Japan, and to some extent, in the US as well). To be truthful, we too find ourselves not talking about 8K anymore to our clients (at least in the sense of it having 16 times higher resolution than HD, four times higher than UHD, etc). Instead, we offer to utilise the technology to help them live up to their business potential. Some of our customers use our high-resolution cameras to track players in real-time during sports games, others use the camera as a piece of measurement equipment, assessing
the inside of tunnels to ensure they are structurally sound.

Lately, we have been working with a client who wants to shoot live programmes more efficiently with fewer resources. This has been a global trend for several years now, either to reduce production cost or to increase the number of programmes able to be shot in one timespan, and we believe we can use 8K technology here, too. The idea of cutting out portions of the image from an 8K master and using them as parts of a programme is not new, but we have combined this idea with automated camera movement (mimicking an operator-
controlled camera) and AI to detect regions of interest. Now it is possible to make quasi-multi-camera programmes with just one stationary 8K camera and automation software. This frees up resources and allows companies to utilise them in other areas, among other favourable results.
