#IBC2024 5G VIDEO SERVICES IN FOCUS
Throughout IBC2023, Verizon Business placed a signifi cant emphasis on the “increasingly critical role” being played by 5G in media, entertainment and live event broadcasting. The latest generation of telco networks is also the central focus for the company at this year’s event, including at a Fireside Chat event being held as part of the IBC Conference from 11:30-12:00 today.
“It is very much a continuation of the 2023 theme, but in conjunction with a major announcement we are making ahead of the show,” says Josh Arensberg, CTO, Media and Entertainment for Verizon Business, alluding to a development that was still under wraps at the time of interview. “What I can say is that Verizon is very committed to the space and delivering on what makes media and entertainment technology work, and at the core of all that is our network and its 5G capabilities,” he adds.
Newsgathering and in particular sports continue to be priority applications for Verizon’s 5G services. As the Offi cial 5G Network of the National Hockey League (NHL), the company has already piloted a Verizon Private 5G Wireless Network at New Jersey Devils home venue, the Prudential Center, supporting the use of wireless offi cials’ iPads for replay review, video coaching, and coach/video coach communications.
“Verizon is very committed to the [5G] space and delivering on what makes media and entertainment technology work”
In addition, Arensberg confi rms that the National Football League (NFL) – with whom Verizon signed a 10-year deal to serve as offi cial 5G partner in 2021 – is also exploring the “leveraging of private 5G wireless networks” for various tasks on the fi eld of play and in the venues.
5G IN SPORT
Expanding on the evolving use of 5G in sports environments, Arensberg says that “obviously you have to have a very robust core network in place in addition to the private wireless network. And what the teams and venues are using [the private 5G] connectivity for is two-fold: fi rstly, for audience-facing, ‘fan experience’ use cases; and secondly, for operational issues that can be solved with this kind of ubiquitous, low-latency network connectivity.”
Arensberg: ‘[IBC] continues to be a place where deals get done’ During the Fireside Chat, Verizon Business
Group’s Chief Product & Marketing Offi cer, Iris Meijer, will detail the development with the NHL of a “portfolio of 5G-enabled edge compute video workfl ows for addressing REMI production opportunities for camera to cloud, replay, graphics, technical direction and more. It’s all for NHL games in this case, but it’s also highly replicable for other live sporting and entertainment venues.”
It is anticipated that discussion of Verizon’s 5G services will dominate the company’s entire time at IBC, although it will also be drawing attention to its recently issued 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report. This provides an opportunity to learn about the latest trends in “real-world security incidents
and breaches”, enabling organisations to evaluate potential changes to their own security provisions. Arensberg is in no doubt about the enduring value of IBC. “It continues to be a place where deals get done,” he confi rms. “I’m a huge proponent of face-to-face interaction and the engagement that a show like this creates for our industry. The fact is that you can’t achieve such a great level of senior engagement at any other show.”
The Verizon Fireside Chat takes place from 11:30:12:00 today in Conference Room 1. Delegate passes can be purchased at
