32 A WINNING COMBINATION: HOW SPORT IS DRIVING TECH INNOVATION

This year has been an incredible year of sport with the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Euro 2024, two T20 World Cups and so many more events that have amazed and engrossed viewers around the globe.

The technology behind bringing people closer than ever to the sports they love, capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments and engaging new fans is being discussed throughout IBC2024 as sport continues to be a major driver of broadcast technology developments.

AI is, of course, leading much of this innovation and IBC Conference delegates will be able to learn from three broadcasters at the forefront of implementing AI in real-world sporting applications today. ‘AI in Action’, taking place in Conference Room 1 at 10:00, will see Huma Lodhi, Principal Machine Learning Engineer, Sky, explain how genAI is delighting sports fans. Chris Jackson, Global Head of Digital Data and Analytics, Olympic Channel, will then share his learnings, trade- offs and the challenges faced in delivering practical benefi ts from current generation AI at speed and massive scale, sharing examples from Paris 2024, before Hardeep Dhaliwal, Head of Data Capability, ITV, advises on how to

build a solid data foundation to enable AI. The three will then join moderator Tom Bowers, Founder, Hypothesis Media, for what is sure to be an insightful and engaging panel discussion. This is followed by Clive Santamaria, Chief Architect at ITV, and Ian Wagdin, Senior Technology Transfer Manager, BBC, exploring the evolution of live production and where we are on the IP journey. Today’s fi nal IBC Conference session in Conference Room 1 is also sport-focused, with Johannes Franken, Director of Digital, HBS, examining the state of the art in immersive technologies, their affi nity with sport content and how new monetisation concepts can be developed. On the free-to-attend Showcase Theatre in Hall 8, Zixi CEO Gordon Brooks will moderate a session at 10:30 looking at how the company is working with Verizon to deliver NHL content over 5G networks, dramatically reducing costs for broadcasters, and simplifying complex cloud-based video workfl ows for any of a number of production requirements. He will be joined by Grant Nodine, SVP Technology, NHL, and Tim Stevens, Global Leader, Strategic Innovation, Media & Entertainment, Verizon. At 10:45 on Content Everywhere

Hardeep Dhaliwal, Head of Data Capability, ITV
