 A man driving a 1990 Fiesta completed a journey in 2 hours at 40 km/h. A woman driving a 2014 Ferrari completed the same journey in 1 hour at 80 km/h.


 A single pump can fi ll a swimming pool in 24 hours. If three pumps of the same power as the single pump are used, it takes only 8 hours to fi ll the pool.


These are examples of inverse proportion.


The value of one variable y decreases at the same rate as the value of the other variable x increases. In other words: If x is halved, y is doubled, or if x is quadrupled, y is quartered, and so on.
