As cities evolve, land re-zoning and land use changes can lead to objections from residents and local business owners.
CASE STUDY: THE POOLBEG INCINERATOR, DUBLIN
The proposed change of land use to build an incinerator in the Docklands is an example of a land use that is repellent to residential land use. There was major opposition from local residents to the proposal. Objections were based on both environmental and social concerns, as well as the economic impact of the development on the value of nearby properties.
In 2007, planning permission for the incinerator was applied for. Supporters of the project argued that with new EU directives Ireland was running out of landfill and the proposed waste- to-energy plant supplying electricity and local heating was the norm across the EU.
