Cardinal points: The four main points of the compass – north, south, east and west. It is vital to know all 16 points of the compass so one can indicate the exact direction required.
Directions on a map are given in the form of compass points (Fig. 12.5(a)).
1. Mark the starting point (X). Using a ruler and pencil, draw a straight line to the point you are asked to get the direction to (Y).
2. Draw a compass on X and see which point of the compass corresponds to the line you have drawn to Y.
3. Start with the four cardinal points, then the secondary points and so on.
