The introduction of a variety of different policies contributed to the development of the EU.
Economic policies
The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) provides supports to improve farmers’ incomes, increase production and achieve security of food supply.
The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) supports the fishing industry by preserving fish stocks through quotas and a system of Maximun Sustainable Yields (MSY).
Cohesion Policy is an EU strategy aimed at reducing differences in development levels between regions. Projects are funded under the European Social Fund, the Cohesion Fund and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Since 1975, the ERDF has provided funding for infrastructural development designed to promote economic growth in peripheral regions (e.g. the Mezzogiorno), areas experiencing industrial decline (e.g. the Sambre Meuse Valley) and border areas (e.g. Northern Ireland and the Republic).
