A region is an area of the earth’s surface. Characteristics used to differentiate regions include climatic, geomorphological, administrative, cultural, socio- economic and urban.

Figure 17.1 shows the variety and extent of climate types around the world. A variety of different factors combine to give these climates their temperature and precipitation characteristics.
